To The Honble the Committee of Safety for the State of New hamp- shire upon Receipt of your order I sent Imediately for Coll Smith and we have made the Best Return we Can according to the Returns we have Received from the several and Respective towns and as to time Each man Enlisted we were of opinion that if we should attempt it it would be so uncertain that it would do more hurt than Good but in Gen- eral say that there is but a very small Number but what Listed at the first Enlistment I should have sent to the several towns for Information but the time would not allow of it and the travilling so bad and the Reg- iment so extensive I Could not do it it is probable that when you Com- pare this Return with the Return of the several muster masters you1 be able to Come at the Certainty of the Case I am Gentlemen With Great Respect your Honours most obedient Humle Servt Joseph Badger Dated at Gilmantown

This may Certify that this return of the Men that Engaged in my Reg- iment in the Continental Service for Three Years or during the War, is Carefully made out and is a Right as can be come at, The first Forty two Men upon the Roll are the Men that Engaged in My Regiment for the Several Towns within the same as Set forth on the Roll which makes thirty nine Men Exclusive of the Three Lieutenants, The proportion of my Regiment being Forty Seven Men there leaves a Deficiency of Eight Men in my Regiment which falls upon the Town of New Holderness Three men Deficient & upon the Town of Alexandria Five men Defi- cient, George Coffin of Thornton is in the Service of the Massachusetts State but Thornton Returns him as one of their proportion but if he can- not be one for Thornton then Thornton is one Man Deficient besides Deficiency already Mentioned. The Blanks in the Roll of the Town Captains &c was not known-
According to my Directions this Return was to have been Sent to the Committee of Safety by the fifteenth of February last but as I did not re- ceive the Directions for making the return till about the last of February I could not get it made out and Sent forward sooner than at this Time-
