Notes to the Reader.


I. THE calculations of this Almanack are made to folar or apparent time; to which, for the mean or clock time, apply the equation given in the fifth column, adding when the Sun s flow, and fubtracting when faft.


II. The time of high water, at New-York, is fo computed as to ferve for either morning or afternoon, fufficiently near for common ufe; the morning Rood being about twelve' mi- nutes earlier than the time in the tide-column, and that of the afternoon as much Inter.


III. The rifing, fetting, or fouthing of a ftar, may be car- ried feveral days backward by adding, or forward by fubtract. ing, four minutes per day : for inftance, on the 8th of Janua- ry Sirius is fouth at 15 minutes paft 11; adding 12 minutes for three days fooner, we have 1th. 27m. for the fouthing on the 5th, and deducting 8 minutes for two later, leaves 11h. ym. for that of the roth of the fame month, &c.


IV. As the day ends at midnight, the rifing, fetting and Southing of the Moon, when after that time, is found againft Che facceeding day : fo, on the night of (or following) the 14 !! lof January, the Moon fets at Ih. 17m. after midnight, viz. ir (the morning of the 15th; not ch. 1Sm. the time oppofite the ruth, which is that of its fetting the preceding morning.
