PREFACE.
One of the objects of The Holland Society of New York is defined by the Constitution to be to " collect and preserve in- formation respecting the early history and settlement of the city and State of New York by the Dutch, and to discover, collect, and preserve all still existing documents, etc., relating to their genealogy and history."
In carrying out this object, the Society has sought to secure copies of all Dutch church records of the country antedating this century, and now has in its possession transcripts of nearly all such records now existing. Several years ago the Society published as its first volumes of collections the records of the Reformed Dutch churches of Hackensack and Schraalen- burgh, New Jersey-including the registers of members, mar- riages, baptisms, and the consistories to the beginning of the nineteenth century. These volumes have proven to be of great assistance to many who were seeking to trace their lines of descent.
The present volume consists of all the records extant be- longing to the church at New Paltz. This church was estab- lished in 1683 as a Huguenot church, and for some years the records were kept in the French language. The records from 1702 to 1730 are missing. Possibly no records for this period were kept at New Paltz, and the marriages and the baptisms may have been registered at Kingston. From 1730 until 1799 the records, with a few exceptions, were kept in Dutch, but in the latter year the Dutch was supplanted by the English language.
The translating and copying were done by Mr. D. Versteeg, who has done similar work for the Society in nearly all the church records now in possession of the Society. Mr. B. Fer- now, of Albany, has also made a translation of these New Paltz church records, which is now in possession of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, and through the courtesy of that Society a comparison of these two transcripts has been made to promote accuracy.

THE NEW PALTZ CHURCH RECORDS
-
THE NEW PALTZ CHURCH RECORDS.
Volume I. of the records of the New Paltz Reformed Church is a small memorandum book of seventeen pages only, written in French with the exception of two items which are in Dutch. The record begins with an account of the organization of the church, January 22, 1683, and then follows the record of bap- tisms. Intermingled with these are a few items of records of marriages, membership, burials etc., which it has been deemed best to insert just as they appear in the original, rather than transfer them to the different appropriate records. The last continuous entry in this first volume is under date of February 21, 1702, after which there comes a gap extending to July 6, 1718, when the baptism of two children is recorded in Dutch. With these ends the first volume of the records. The second volume, as we have it, begins August 10, 1729, and it is evident that the book containing the records for the inter- vening years from 1702 to 1729, has been lost.
We have given a translation of the brief account of the or- ganization of the church, and have followed it with an account of the history as it appears from the calls to the several Domines, the building of two or three church edifices, and such accounts as are found in the books of records. These items were scattered promiscuously through the volumes and have been collated and inserted as nearly as could be in chrono- logical order.
The minutes of the Consistory are then given and the records of members, marriages, and baptisms.

(Signed) JOH. MAURITIUS GOETCHIUS, V. D. M.
On this 19th day of July at the house of Simon Duboy we held a meeting of the Consistory after having called upon God's name, and discussed the following point :
It was asked whether a member of the congregation at Schawankong may be admitted to the Lord's table here, without a written certificate ?
The resolution and opinion of the Consistory in regard to this question is, that they do not see why they should require a certificate of the brethren of the Consistory of Schawankong for any God-fearing member of the congregation who might be desirous here to receive the Lord's Supper. This Consist- ory only resolves that such a person shall previously at the right time and place make known his desire either to the preacher or to the Consistory.
(From Book No. 4.)
Extracts from the minutes at the founding of the Second Church at New Paltz :
6
"On August 29, 1767, came together at the house of Henri- cus DuBoys, Domine Izaac Rysdyk with his Consistory and five members of the Reformed Nether Dutch Church who have here- tofore belonged to the congregation of Kingston, viz. : Josia Eltinge, Noach Eltinge, Petrus Van Wagena, Jacob DuBoys, and Dirk D. Wynkoop, who, with some other members of the said Nether Dutch Church, have built a church here for the purpose of observing their most holy religion, and had requested Domine Isaac Rysdyk, Instructor at Pochkeepsie and Fishkill, as neighboring preacher, to be present at the organization and consecration of a Christian Reformed Nether Dutch congrega- tion. (He) had been specially and in writing charged and au- thorized by his Consistory [to be present]." (See a translation of the whole on page 7.)
At the same time was read the following letter, in Dutch :
"We undersigned Consistory of Kingston having been re- quested by the after named members of our Church, living at the Paltz, and who have built a new church there, for the pur- pose of exercising by themselves all the rites of our Nether Dutch Reformed Church in the same, to legally dismiss them and to provide them with letters, have, after mature delibera- tion of the said request, been neither at liberty nor willing to refuse it, but hereby dismiss from among us the said members, viz. : Josia Eltinge, Noach Eltinge, Petrus Van Wagenen, Jacob Du Boys, Rebecka Van Wagenen, Dirk D. Wynkoop, Magdalena Du Boys, Jacomyntje Eltinge, and Sara Louw, un- der condition that from among the aforesaid members, within two months time, either by Domine Rysdyk or some other neighboring preacher belonging to the Classis of Amsterdam a Consistory shall be elected and thus a Nether Dutch Re- formed congregation be formed, acknowledging the jurisdiction of the Reverend Classis of Amsterdam. Thus enacted by the Consistory of the Church of Kingston, August 3d, 1767.
(Below was written) :
In the name and by the authority of the Reverend Consistory of Kingston,
(Signed) - HEND. SLEGHT. ABRAHAM LOW."
It was resolved to elect from among the said five members a Consistory of one Elder and one Deacon, and there were sub-
7
sequently unanimously elected, as Elder Noach Eltinge and as Deacon Petrus Van Wagenen.
At the same time were admitted and acknowledged as mem- bers of this congregation :
Petrus Low. Henricus Du Boys.
Debora Van Vliet.
Jannetye Hooghteyling.
Salomon Low. Izaac Low.
Here follows the history of the founding of the Second Church at New Paltz.
On August 29 [1767] met together at the house of Henricus DuBois, Do. Izaac Rysdyk with his Consistory and five mem- bers of the Reformed Nether Dutch Church who previously belonged to the congregation of Kingston, viz. Josia Eltinge, Noach Eltinge, Petrus Van Wagena, Jacob DuBoys, Dirk D. Wynkoop who besides some other members of the said Nether Dutch Church have here built a church for the purpose of exercising their most holy religion and had requested as neigh- boring preacher Do. Isaac Rysdyk, Instructor at Poughkeepsie and Fishkill to assist at the organization and consecration of a Christian Reformed Nether Dutch congregation, and who had been specially and in writing authorised for the purpose by his Consistory.'
After calling upon God's holy name for a blessing upon this important undertaking the aforesaid members, besides the others, communicated to Do. Rysdyk, upon his request, the reasons why they had here erected a church by themselves, and why, by leaving the congregation of Kingston and of the New Paltz, though the latter is situated close by here, they are desirous of founding a congregation by themselves ; viz :
First, because the congregation of the New Paltz and its preacher, Do. Mauritius Goetschius have separated from the orderly subordination to the Reverend Classis of Amsterdam under which the Nether Dutch Reformed congregations in this province have belonged from olden times and still ought to belong, and because all those preachers and congregations who call themselves Coetus, by the resolution of the Synod of 1765 and in accordance with the last letter of the Reverend Classis to the so-called Coetus, dated June 3, 1765, have been considered by the Reverend Synod of North Holland and by the Reverend Classis of Amsterdam as preachers and congre- gations which cannot be recognised as lawful, because they separated from the authority of the Reverend Classis, and
8
wanted to organise here, in opposition to the ordinances of the Church an independent Classis, for which the said Classis de- clares to have neither might nor right, as is apparent from the following extracts of the Synodal Resolutions of 1763, as follows page 14, Post quedam alia :
I. " That those calling themselves Coetus, thus have become guilty of despicable ingratitude against their benefactors, who have so long labored for their well-being and have exerted so many efforts in behalf of the churches of New York, and that, acting in this manner and persevering in their actions, they give just cause to the Classis of Amsterdam and to the Synod of North Holland to break with them entirely and to stop all intercourse with them etc., etc."
In this aforesaid minute of the Synod can also be found the important reasons for this resolution, as well of the committee of investigation of the petition of the Coetus, as of the Classis of Amsterdam, pp. 8 and 9. See the Extract of the Minutes of the Synod held at Edam from July 26 till August 4, 1763, printed at New York by John Holt, 1765.
II. Of what the Reverend Classis writes in the letter to the so-called Coetus on the aforementioned date, where among the other matters it says :
" You say that you hope that the Classis will seize this opportunity, as being the last time that you will make the request.
"From the contents of this [letter] it appears that the classis, according to your opinion has not yielded, nor can do so.
"We therefore reply that whereas it is plain that you want to secede from us, we therefore in after times shall consider you as a body of preachers who have seceded from us, and consequently we are not in a condition from now on to treat you as such Brethren with whom we can live in amicable inter- course, as the nature of our union with you requires."
And in the end of the letter :
"Further, brethren, we commend you to God and his mercy who is mighty to build you up, and considering your decision as final, we shall, from now on, have no further com- munications with you." (See the said classical letter printed at New York by John Holt, 1765.)
For which and other reasons they cannot recognise the said preacher and congregation as lawful, because, since the arrival of the last named letter they persevered and are still perse- vering in their decision-so much the less because the above
9
named persons consider the afore mentioned subordination as lawful, beneficial and necessary for the maintenance of the pure doctrine and discipline of our Reformed Nether Dutch Church, for the exercise whereof we have perfect liberty by virtue of the eighth article of the capitulation of 1664, ratified in the treaty of peace of 1667.
Whereby yet come the revilings and insults by the said Do. Goetschius and some of the so-called Coetus hurled at the Classis and Synod of Holland.
Secondly, the five members of the congregation of Kingston declared that they are living too far away from the church of Kingston to dutifully and statedly attend divine worship there, either for themselves, or to properly educate their children, according to their solemn promise at the holy baptism, in the pure doctrine of the truth, and to lead them to the communion of a Reformed (and to the Reverend Classis of Amsterdam subordinated) congregation. They, therefore, can neither be edified here, nor find a proper opportunity therein and for observing their precious religious duties.
Mr. Dirk D. Wynkoop gave for himself the following reasons : having, last spring, changed his place of residence from King- ston to this place, and now also living at too great a distance from the said church to observe his religious duties there, he therefore wanted to join this new congregation.
That they together for the above mentioned reasons had, in the fear of the Lord, undertaken the building of a church here which, being now almost completed, they requested might be solemnly dedicated by Do. Rysdyk as neighboring preacher. They consequently surrendered to Do. Isaac Rysdyk their letter of dismissal from the congregation of Kingston which having been read was approved, reading as follows :
[This letter appears on page 6.]
Do. Rysdyk and his Consistory having heard the afore men- tioned reasons, and read the letter of dismissal, certified the same to be legal and reasonable ; wherefore they also fully approved of the building of the church with good wishes for God's much needed blessing in the founding, increase and upbuilding of this church and congregation.
Copy of the Church certificate of Do. Joh. Mauritius Goet- schins :
We the undersigned constituting the Consistory of the Re- formed Church of Jesus Christ in the High and Nether Dutch language at Schoharey, attest and certify by the present that
IO
the Rev. Joh. Mauritius Goetschius has been for two years and a half our stated Pastor and Instructor, and has also during this time, faithfully, diligently and assiduously inculcated, ac- cording to the word of God our salutary and pure doctrines and articles of faith, at the same time illustrating and confirm- ing them through a pious conversation and life. For these reasons we recommend him everywhere as a pions instructor, wishing him all hail and blessing.
Thus given at Schoharey in our Consistory meeting on this 6th day of August, 1760.
Barendt Vrooman. Williem Enderson.
