The following translations were made from Book 5.
In the year of our Lord 1771, October 25th, the Christian Reformed Nether Dutch congregation at New Paltz met, and discussed the fact that their present church is no longer sufficient to hold religious meetings in.
They therefore resolved to build a new church in the village of New Paltz on a piece of ground bought of Petronella Lefever, located on the west side of the street and opposite the north side of Colonel Abraham Hasbrouck's house lot. And the same to be built in the manner as described below :
Primo. The Consistory of our congregation shall visit the members of the congregation to request each in particular to contribute or promise a certain amount, to be paid in such a manner as is here below stipulated, for the building of the aforesaid new church. A list shall be kept of how much and what every one promises whether money or labor or any- thing else in erecting the said church.
35
And after the Consistory shall have visited the members, and made up the subscription list, and judges that the subscriptions are sufficient for building the church, tour advertisements shall be nailed up in the most public places of our precinct where- by all persons having subscribed towards erecting the aforesaid church shall be requested to appear at a certain day, hour and place for the purpose of electing seven men from among them, and to constitute them a committee in the following manner :
The aforesaid seven men after having been elected on the aforesaid day by a majority of the votes of those who have subscribed for the church, shall have absolute power to dispose of the money, the labor and anything else promised on the above mentioned list, for the purpose of here building the church. They are also empowered, after the church shall have been completed, to make rules and regulations for the same in such a manner that they shall not be contrary to the Christian Reformed Church order. They shall also have power to determine the size of the building, but in such a manner that they shall erect the aforesaid church on the plot of ground in the aforesaid village mentioned above.
And eight days after the seven men shall have been elected and been qualified they shall meet at a certain place and hour in the aforesaid village, and then the aforesaid seven men shall elect one from among themselves as overseer or builder of the church, and also to receive the money and labor promised upon the list, and to dispose of the same for what shall be wanted in building the church in conformity with the in- struction of all seven or any four of them. And the person who shall be elected overseer or master builder shall be appointed after the other six shall first have agreed with him about the amount he is willing to do it for, the said amount not to exceed fifteen pounds.
And after this one man shall have been elected and com- missioned by the other six he shall make a memorandum book in which the whole of these instructions by the congregation shall be entered, and the seven men also shall sign their names, besides the one man who shall be elected by or from among the seven and further also the time when. (sic)
And the above named subscription list shall also be copied in the book, every one's subscription specially, and after the subscription shall have been paid or discharged the same shall be credited on the side opposite.
But the man who shall have been elected by the other six for the purpose of receiving the money and labor and to be
36
overseer shall be obliged to deposit a bond with the other six before being allowed to enter upon his functions, and with such security as the other six shall deem proper, viz. of any amount not less than five hundred pounds.
And after the seven men shall have resolved to commence operations they shall meet and discuss about the best methods to be followed and write them down, and thereupon the one man from among the seven who shall have been elected for the purpose shall take the plan and work according to it, and after it shall have been completed all seven shall meet again, and the man who supervised the work according to the plan shall then render his accounts to the other six, containing a report of how and at what expense the work has been per- formed. And at this same meeting they shall again work out a plan about what is most advisable to be done in erecting the aforesaid church, and the master builder shall again proceed according to it, and thus it shall be done from time to time until the church shall have been completed.
And in case the Director of the work should happen to die or move away, or that his accounts should not be straight, the other six shall be qualified to elect from their number another master or overseer. After the election of this new overseer or master the retiring one shall be obliged according to his bond, either by himself or through his heirs, to deliver to the new overseer or master of the work all the money, and the book, the papers and everything further related to it, and shall also render a correct account of the same to the remaining six, or have to forfeit the aforesaid bond . And the new overseer or master shall also first procure a bond as above explained, and shall have the same power as the former overseer. And this shall take place from time to time as long as it shall be neces- sary to elect new overseers.
And all the above instructions and plans and accountings and whatever more shall be done by the seven men in building the aforesaid church shall be entered in the above named book.
And in case the promised money or labor or other things should not suffice in building the Church, the aforesaid seven men or any four of them shall be authorised to again visit the members of the congregation for the purpose of receiving money or other necessaries for building the church. And in case this should not yet be sufficient the above named seven men or any four among them shall be authorised to take up as much money as they judge will be necessary for completing the church, wherever they can find it, and in case it cannot be

had in any other manner, to give interest for the same, and thus complete the church. And in order to pay back the borrowed money it shall be distributed over all the seats in the Church, as a rent laid equally upon every place. But the places for Consistory, the minister's place and the common pews shall be exempt from the aforesaid rent. All of those claiming their seat or seats shall be obliged first to pay the said rent to the aforesaid seven men or any four among them before they shall receive their title to the seat.
And before the seven men or any four among them shall distribute the places in the church, they shall figure out how much the church shall have cost or is to cost ; and after hav- ing done this they shall take an inventory of the number of seats in the church except, as was said before, the seats reserved for the Consistory, the domine and the poor (gemeene Banken). And when they have learned the cost of the church and also know the number of seats to be distributed in the church, the above said seven men or any four among them shall divide the cost by all seats in the church which are to be distributed, an equal share upon every place. And the calculation or division shall be made in such a manner that the above named amount is exactly covered [by the tax] on the above named seats.
And then they shall invite the congregation to appear on a certain day and hour in the aforesaid church, and in order to render justice to every body and to satisfy those to whom they owe places, (or their heirs), they shall publicly dispose of the places to the highest bidder ; and this shall be subsequently done with all places to be distributed.
And the money, labor or anything else which any body has contributed to the said church shall be regarded as payment for his or her seat or seats in the church, as far as it will reach.
And those having contributed much towards the church will be repaid in seats but in no other manner ; but those having contributed little to the church shall be held to add to it in case they purchased a seat or seats which cost more than the amount of their contribution, provided always that nobody shall buy more seats in the church than he is entitled to for . what he paid or did for the church, until all those who took a share in building the church shall have received their seat or seats in exchange.
But in case any money contributed towards building the said church, shall remain unexpended and not be required for building the aforenamed church that same money or anything else not used, shall remain the property of the church.
