PREFACE.

THE DIRECTORY for 1859-60 contains 147,325 names, being 7,521 more than it contained last year, when there were but 139,804. Though the collection and printing of these additional names entails a much greater expenditure of both time and money, without any corre- sponding increase of profit, yet, inasmuch as this increase indicates a greater amount of business and an unusual degree of prosperity, the extra cost has been most cheerfully borne, and would have been if it were double what it is. It will be a sorry day when the annual numbering of the inhabitants of this vast metropolis shall show a check in its yearly growth, or a diminution of its prosperity. Last year, which was the immediate successor of the panic season of 1857, exhibited an actual falling off in the popula- tion of the city; but the diminution was apparent rather than real. There were many business firms which had suspended in the preceding Winter or Fall, whose members still made New York their home as much as before, but their names did not appear in the Directory, as their firms were dissolved, or gone into liquida- tion, while the partners and their clerks lived in the suburbs, wait- ing for the resumption of their business. A very important change had taken place, too, in one of the largest mechanical interests of the city, that of ship-building, whereby thousands of workmen had been temporarily thrown out of employment, and they and their families had gone where living was cheaper ; for New York is no place for idle workmen; the cost of living and the demand for

money by the exigencies of daily life are too pressing to admit of idleness, and the mechanic without work must either starve or move. Happily all the dark clouds which lowered about the commercial world have disappeared, and the sun of our prosperity is shining again as brightly as ever. It is only necessary to look at the in- creased bulk of the Directory, to see that the city has fully recover- ed from the staggering blow it received in 1857, and is now in its usual condition of prosperous expansion.

Fewer annoyances and hinderances have been experienced this year in the prosecution of our work than have been encountered hitherto, which is the natural result of the lessons of past years, and the perfecting of the machinery by which the business of col- lecting and arranging the names is effected. But still, there are many more obstacles to be encountered, more crotchety and capri- cious people to be dealt with and conciliated, than persons having no experience in such affairs could imagine to be possible. Some people from a sheer love of giving trouble will withhold their names altogether, while others, from a spirit of mischief, will give false information to our collectors, and then complain of the very mistakes which they caused, themselves. It would be useless to attempt to give any detailed account of these annoyances, and they would probably only serve to gratify the persons who caused them, by showing how much serious inconvenience they had occasioned. There are a few examples, however, which, in justice to the public, should be given. There are a good many people living in New York under aliases, such as male and female "physicians," actors and actresses, who find it convenient to have a name for the public dif- ferent from their legal appellations. It is a difficult matter to deal with persons of this class, some of whom insist that only their pro- fessional names shall be given, while others insist that both their le- gal and their professional designations shall be given separately, and others again will have only their legal names. We have uniformly pursued but one course, and that has been to give only the genuine name where it can be ascertained, and making a small charge for inserting the assumed name when it has been desired. But this course has, in one or two cases, subjected us to considerable per- sonal abuse, especially from a certain "Female Physician," who,

PREFACE.

like many others, appears to labor under the very mistaken idea, that the Directory is published expressly for her convenience, and to afford her a cheap medium for advertising her professional services. But there could not be a greater mistake than to imagine that in a work like this, which is intended for the benefit of the entire com- munity, in which space is so valuable and all superfluous matter so costly, where the utmost economy must be practised to place it within the reach of the great body of the people for whose use it is intended, there can be any room devoted to further individual in- terests.

We have heretofore explained at some length the details of the process by which the Directory is compiled, and the system upon which it has arrived at its present nearly perfect condition. It will be unnecessary to repeat these details now. The public only de- mands a comprehensive and accurate work, and we have the satis- faction, in presenting the Directory for 1859-60, to feel conscious that it makes a closer approximation to what is needed than has ever been done before ; and a comparison with the prices at which sim- ilar works have been sold in other cities will show that this is by far the cheapest that has ever been offered to the public.
