Loockermans. Three brothers of this name were among the first settlers of New Netherland, - Govert Janse, who settled in New Amsterdam, where he m. Maritie Janse, July 11, 1649,-and Jacob and Pie- ter Janse Loockermans, who settled in Beverwyck. Jacob was in Beverwyck as early as 1657: the sheriff brought a suit against him for having assaulted Men- wes Hoogeboom and split his face open from his fore- head to his underlip with his knife ; he was fined 350 guilders and ordered to pay for loss of time, board and surgical attendance. In 1664he was one of the com- missioners to negotiate a treaty of peace between the Mohawk and Northern Indians. Pieter Janse Loock- ermans was a citizen of Beverwyck in 1656 ; in 1658, he was boatswain in the service of the W. I. Com- pany. He had a son Pieter, and daughter Lammertie who married Arien Oothout.

Loveridge, William, hatter. In 1671 he bought a house and lot of Pieter Jacobse Borsboom on the cast side of Broadway, bounded north by the king's court house. This lot was taken to extend Hudson street to the river. In 1676 he was accused of having charged the Dutch with supplying the Indians with ammunition, and ordered to be kept in custody until he made good the charge ; not proving the same, he was fined 20 beavers. In 1678 he and others were condemned for planting a scandalous tree before the door of Richard Pretty, magistrate ; he addressed Capt. Brockhols in extenuation, that it was a custom of the place to set up a tree on the occasion of mar- riage; notwithstanding, his sentence was confirmed. In 1680 he owned a farm at Catskil, and petitioned for an addition of 40 acres. He had a son William.

Geer- truy Isabella Lydius, and Maria Adrianata Lydins, were naturalized Feb. 28, 1716. The latter was buried in the church, May 4, 1733. Marselis, Hendrik, was one of Melyn's colonists of Staten Island, having come over probably with the others in the New Netherland's Fortune in 1650. In 1654, he had a grant of a lot in Beverwyck. When Staten Island was attacked by the Indians in 1655, he fled with his wife, two children (daughters), and servant, and removed to Fort Orange, where he made a permanent settlement. In 1673, he dwelt " behind Kinderhook," where his son-in-law Matthys Coen- raedse lived. His other daughter m. Patrick Mc- Gregory. He acted as city porter in 1697, in which year he died about Nov. 1. His wife was Tryn Van den Bergh.
MARCELIS, Janse Van Bommel, "born at Bommel in Gelderland," one of the first setlers of Beverwyck and ancestor of those bearing the name of Marselis, in this region. was farmer of the excise for several years following 1655. His children were Hillegonda, who married Cornelis Van Ruyven, the colonial secretary : Dirck : Jan, who he- came a physician and practiced in Beverwyck in 165-4. in New Amsterdam 1655, and removed to Holland about 1656; Samuel, educated in Harvard College, and at Leyden, and returned to New Amsterdam.

In 1703-4, the con-istory of the church dealt with him for refusing to pay his seat rent for the benefit of the domine's salary ; after standing out for a time he yielded.
