Rutgers. Two brothers, Rutger and Teunis Ja- cobse Van Schoenderwoert or Van Woert were among the early settlers of Beverwyck and originated two families, distinct in name and locality. Rutger Jacobsen's descendants assumed the surname of Rut- gers, and were later found in New York and vicinity : his brother Teunis's descendants took the surname Van Schoenderwoert, or simply, Van Woert and set- tled chiefly in Albany county. Genealogies of the First Settlers of Albany.
Rutger Jacobsen, alias Ruf Van Woert, was a man of considerable repute and wealth in the little village in which he served as magistrate many years, proba- bly until his death in 1665. His business was varied ; he owned a sloop upon the river which he sometimes commanded himself; at other times, Abraham De Trnwe [Truax now] was his skipper; he was a considerable dealer in village lots and farming lands, among which was the island called Pachona- kellick or Mohicander's Island, "obliquely over against Bethelchem," owned in partnership with Andries Herbertsen Constapel, and hence sometimes called Constapel's island : In 1651, he bought Jacob Janse Van Noorstrant's brewery and lot in Beaver street nearly opposite the present Middle Dutch church, which was inherited by his son IFerman ; he m. Tryntje Janse Van Breestede in New Amsterdam, June 3, 1646; her sister Dorotec subsequently m. Volckert Janse Douw. After Rutger Jacobsen's death, his widow in her old age, m. Hendrick Janse Rose- boom, Dec. 5, 1695. She is said to have d. at her son's in 1711 at a very great age. It is not known that Jacobsen had more than three ch: two daugh- ters, Margaret, who m. Jan Janse Bleecker; and En- gel, bp. in New Amsterdam, April 10, 1650; and one son, Harmen.
RUTGERS, Harmen, son of Rufger Jacobsen Van Schoenderwoert last mentioned, was probably b. in Beverwyck soon after his father moved there; he was still living in 1720. IFe was a brewer, his brew- ery, which he sold in 1675 to Goosen Gerritse Van Schaick, and Pieter Lassingh, being on the east half of the present Exchange Block; in 1678, Richard Pretty, collector of the excise complained of him for defrauding the excise and selling beer to the Indians, buf after considerable litigation the complaint was dismissed. He had two sons, Anthony and Harmen, who settled in New York.

In 1673, he was sheriff of Rensselaerswyck; and was continued in the office of commander of the fort, until his death about 1671. In 1682, his wid., then w. of Doctor Cornelis Van Dyck, administered on his estate. His son Francis settled in Catskill, where his descendants were nul- merous.

Schaats, Domine Gideon, became the second minister ot the church in Beverwyck, in 1652. Hav- ing become incapacitated by age to perform the duties of his office Domine Dellius became his coadjutor in 1683. He died in 1690 in his 83d year. The name of his first wife is not known ; on the 22d of August, 1683, he married widow Barentje Hendrickse in New York, he being then 75 years old ; she d. in 1688. Three of his children reached mature age ; Reynier, the eldest son ; Anneke, who married Thomas Davidtse Kike- bell, of New York, with whom she had some dis- agreements which were finally amicably arranged ; and Bartholomeus who passed over to Holland, in 1670 and on his return settled in New York as a silversmith. According to the church records, he, with Catalyntje Schaats, [perhaps his wife] abiit cum testimonio Neo Eboraca in 1706. Ile is said to have died about 1720, leaving a son Reynier from whom are descended all of the name now in this country. O' Cal- laghan's Hist. of N. Netherland. He had a daughter Antje, bp. in N. Y. Schaets, Reynier, "Chyrurgion," eldest son of Domine S., was an early settler at Schenectady, where he was appointed justice of the peace by Leisler in 1689. He and a son were killed on the 9th of Feb. 1690, at the massacre and burning of the village by French and Indians. His widow Catrina Bensing, m. Jonathan Broadhurst, in Albany, April 23, 1696. Reynier Schaets left two children, a son Gideon, and dau. Agnietie, who m. Matthys Nak of Albany.

Schermerhooren, Jacob Janse, brewer and trader was born in 1622, it is said in Waterland, Holland ; in 1654, his father was living in Amster- dam. Ile came out to Beverwyck, in 1636, and became a prosperous trader. He made his will May 20, 1688, and soon after died at Schenectady. He left a large estate for the time, amounting to 56,882 guilders. Ile married Jannetie Segers, dan. of Cornelis Segerse Van Voorhoudt, and had nine children : Reyer, Sy- mon, Helena, w. of Myndert Harmense Vander Bogart

SCHERMERHOOREN, Reyer Jacobse, born in Bever- wyck, in 1652, settled in Schenectady, and became a prominent and influential citizen there. Hem. in 1676, Ariaantje Arentse Bratt, widow of Helmer Otten, baker, of Albany. Ile made his will April 5, 1717, and d. Feb. 19, 1719. He had the following Ch ; Jan, bp. ; Oct. 14, 1685; Catalina, w. of Johannes Wemp; Janneke, w. of Volkert Symonse Veeder, Jacob, and Arent, bp., Jan. 1693.
SCHERMERIIOOREN, Symon Jacobse, was born in 1658. At the burning of Schenectady, Feb. 9, 1690, he rode to Albany by way of Niskayuna to carry the news of the massacre, although shot through the thigh and his horse wounded. Ilis son Johannes, together with his three negroes, were killed on that fatal night. In 1691 he removed to New York where he died about 1696, leaving a widow and one son Arnont. Ile mar- ried Willempie Viele, probably dau. of Arnont Cor- nelise V. and had the following ch. bp. in Albany : Johannes, July 23, 1684, killed in 1690 ; Arnout, Nov. 7, 1686 : Maria, bp. in N. Y., 1693; Jannetie, bp. in N. Y., March 24, 1695.
SCHERMERHOOREN, Jacob Jacobse, resided in the manor of Rensselaerswyck and was master of the sloop Star plying between New York and Albany, in 1681-4. He was buried at Papsknee, below Albany, June 20, 1743. He married Gerritie Hendrickse, [Van Buren] and had the following Ch: bp. ; in Albany: Jacob, Dec. 27, 1685 ; Hendrick, Oct. 16, 1687 ; Cornelis, Sept. 22, 1689 ; Magtelt, Jan. 3, 1692 ; Jannetie, May 6, 1691; Elizabeth, August 28, 1698 ; Johannes, July 21, 1700 ; Reyer, Feb. 21, 1702.
SCHERMERHOOREN, Cornelis Jacobse, was living in the of Manor Livingston, near Kinderhook, in 1720. He had previously been master of the sloop Star. He married first ; Maritie Hendrickse Van Buren, Jan. 21. 1695 and secondly. Margarita, Albertse, Feb. 6, 1713. Ch : bp. ; in Albany Jacob, Oct. 4, 1696 ; Ilen- drik, in N.
