A NEW SCHOOL AND REFERENCE DICTIONARY,

Published by D. Appleton & Company.

A DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE : Containing the PRONUNCIATION, ETYMOLOGY, AND EXPLANATION OF ALL WORDS

authorized by eminent writers ; to which are added, A VOCABULARY OF THE ROOTS OF ENGLISH WORDS, AND AN ACCENTED LIST OF GREEK, LATIN, AND SCRIPTURE PROPER NAMES

BY ALEXANDER REID, A. M, Rector of the Circus School, Edinburgh. WITH A CRITICAL PREFACE, BY HENRY REED,

Professor of English Literature in the University of Pennsylvania.

One Volume, 12mo, of near 600 pages, neatly bound in leatber. Price $1.

Among the wants of our time wss s good Dictionary of our own language, especially adapted for academies and schoo The booka which have long been in use, were of little value to the junior students, being too concise in the definitions a immethodical in the arrangement. Roid's English Dictionary was compiled expressly to develope the precise snalogies ai varions properties of the authorized words in general use, by the standard authors and oratore who use our vernacol tongae.

Exclusive of the large numbers of proper names which are sppended, this Dictionary includes four especisi improvemen -and when their essential value to the student is considered, the sterling character of the work as a hand-book of our la gnage will be instantly perceived.

The primitive word is d stingnished by a larger type ; snd where there are any derivatives from it, they follow in alph betical order, and the part of speech is appended, thus furnishing a complete classification of all the connected soslogous wor of the same apec es.

With this facility to comprehend accurately the detarminate meaning of the English word, is conjoined s rich illustratic for the linguist. The derivation of all the primitive words is distinctly givea, and the phrases of the langusges whence the are deduced, whether composite or simple ; so that the student of foreign languages, both ancient and modern. by & referenc to soy word, can ascertain the source whence it has been adopted into our own form of speech. This is a great acquisition 1 the person who is anxious to use words in their utmost clearuess of meaning.

To these advantages is subjnined a Vocabulary of the Roots of English Words, which is of peculiar valae to the collegian The fifty pages which it includes, furnishes the linguist with a wide-spread field of research, equally amusing and instructive Thare is also added an Accented List to the number of fifteen thousand, of Greek, Latin, and Scripture Proper Nanieb.

Recommendations.

Reid's Dictionary of the English Language is so admirable hook for the use of schools. Ita plan combines a greater our her of desirshle conditions for such a work, thna any with which I am acquainted ; and it seems to me to be executed i general, with great judgment, fidelity and accuracy.

Phillips' School, Boston, May 2, 1845.

I have partially examined the Dictionary which you are publishing, and sm much pleased with he plan and execution o the work, so far as I have been able to peruse it. Much matter is condensed into a small compaas. All words in good us. are selected and clesriy defined. Each word is so marked as to indicate its pronunciat.on, and the value of the work ia muci enhanced by containing the derivation of every word. I hope it will meet with that ahsre of patronage which it richl. deserves.

SAMUEL S. GREENE, Master of the Phillips' School

I fully concur in the opinion expressed by Mr. Greene, and should be much pleased hy the introduction of the Dictionary roto our public schoola.

T. BAKER, Principal of the Bolstoa School

After such an examination of Reid's English Dictionary as I have been able to make, I may safely say, that I consider it superior to any of the school Dictionaries with which I am acquainted. Ity accurate and concise definitions, and a vocabulary of the roots of English words, drawn from an author of such authority as Bosworth, are not among the least of its excellencies.

Very respectfully, &c.,

I have examined Reid's English Dictionary with great care ; and am greatly pleased with it. The plan is excellent, and tha suthor has evidently bestowed great attention to miaute accuracy in the details of execution. I hope to see the book ex- tansively used. JOHN FROST, Professor Belles Lettres, Philadelphia High School

Raid's Dictionary of the English Language appears to have been compiled upon sound principles, and with judgment and scenracy. It has the merit, too, of combining much more than is usually looked for iu dictionaries of small size, sad will, I beliave, ba found excellent as a convenient manual for general use and reference, and also for various purposes of education.

HENRY REED,

Professor of English Literature in the University of Peonsylvania.

I have examined Reid's English Dictionary with much interest and satisfaction, and take great pleasure in recommend- ing it as admirably adapted for usefulness in our common schools. The judicions omission of antiquated and obsolete words, has enabled the author to condense the work within small compass, and yet retain every word in our language which is sanctioned by any modern writer of competent authority. The evident care and puins taken in the department of orthoi py, the accurate conform ty of the orthography to the best authorities, and the elaborate etymological learning it exhibits, com hine to render this Dictionary a work of singular merit for schools and families, for which it nppesrs to have been specially desigued hy its author. The vocabulary of the roots of English words, and the exten-ive list of accepted classical and scrip- ture proper names, are important and valuable additions which cannot fail to be appreciated, especially by teachers of schools, for whom it will furaish a standard of reference of more convenient size than any of the dictionaries now in usa.
