THE Price of the Directory is limited to

THREE DOLLARS.

In consequence of the unsettled state of the First ward, it was deemed to be judicious to allow more time than usual for collecting the Names for the Directory ; the publication of the Book, therefore, has been somewhat delayed.

I The address to each name is printed conformably to the directions received from those persons who have made arrangements to re-occupy stores or offices within the limits of the burnt district.

The operations and expenditures attending the publica- tion have been considerably increased; but the Editor presumes not to say that any improvements have been made in the work; its principles being determinative, susceptible of no change or variety, its professed value and importance consist only in its degree of accuracy ; and in the present state of affairs, produced by the confla- gration, human powers and ability could not secure the usual degree of accuracy which has hitherto characterized this work ; but unremitted watchfulness has been exer- cised duringits progress and completion, and if any in- perfection exist let it be noted-

Several persons have not yet determined upon the places which they may occupy for the season ;- these cases, however, are too few to diminish confi- dence in the correctness of the Book, and the Editor trusts that it will prove far more valuable than any previous volume. In order to render it such as it ought to be, lie has not counted the cost; he, therefore, cal- culates upon the disposal of the entire edition, which he is now induced to anticipate will be insufficient to meet the demands of the public; those, therefore, who may intend to possess the Book should make prompt ap- plication, not waiting for notices complimentary in the columns of the daily newspapers, the proprietors of which have to pay full price for any copy which they may pos- sess, and it cannot be expected that they should commend the merits of any work for which they have to pay-no instance of the kind being on record. Every copy of the last edition was sold at the retail price; every copy, save one, was paid for, and the proprietor of every respectable daily newspaper, save one, being a purchaser -- this is an occurrence without parallel in the history of the LITERA - TURE of the country.

The authorities or powers controlling the affairs of the Post Office Department in this city, having declined to furnish the information usually inserted in the Directory

761

the times of arrival and closing of the mails, is therefore, omitted ; this omission is of no disadvantage-the details having been furnished, during some few years past, in a manner too imperfect and confused to render it of any available use to the public.

The Editor desires to express himself explicitly upon one point ; in 1835 he published a Directory, in 1836 he issued a Supplement containing nearly one thousand names, the changes in which were mostly caused by the great conflagration ; for the pamphlet he charged the sum of twenty-five cents : very few bought it; some re- fusing for the reason that they considered themselves entitled to the Supplement GRATUITOUSLY, because they had purchased the previous Directory :

the who presumes to think that the Editor is under any obligation to the purchaser, is re- quested to keep his money and leave the Book in the hands of the publisher :- lie who buys the Book is ac- quitted from all pecuniary obligation ; receiving the price demanded, the publisher can require no more ; but he requests that no man will become a pur- chaser who doess ot consider the Book itself to be richly worth the price charged: that it will prove so this year is confidently expected by the Editor, who has exerted himself with unqualified entireness to make it valuable to the public at large-to those who buy the Book, and even to those who come under the unenvied character of habitual Borrowers : the Editor here respectfully remarks, that his denunciation of Borrowing is directed against the wealthy portion of his fellow citizens, those beings who ride in their own carriages, and yet daily use a bor- rowed Directory.

In the year 1833 the Publisher of this work was, by civil process issued by the U. S. Government, ejected from his then agreeable situation at the corner of Pine and Nassau-streets : he thereupon located himself in the pleasantest office in the first ward, from which he has been expelled by the uncommonly high rents charged in that section of the city : he has now retreated to the vi- cinity of the various Philanthropic Institutions of the present times, where all those who are zealously exercised in promoting the reformation of their fellow creatures are invited to de- monstrate their own personal sincerity in the cause of moral honesty by the purchase of the " New-York City Directory :" here he has engaged a lease of his present very eligible premises, which are of admirable ar- rangement and convenience for any reputable occupancy, and sufficiently substantial for any kind of business, and from which he is not disposed voluntarily to retire, without being reasonably compensated for his interest therein ; he considers himself entitled to a prominent situation in this neighbourhood, for in the History of Public Benefactors the name of the Editor should take undisputed precedence; as it may be assumed that at least five thousand persons, daily, from year to year, reap decided benefit from the use of the New-York City Directory, without any remuneration therefor being ob- tained by the Editor !

The number of new names contained in the present, which are not in the preceding volume, is about nine thousand.
