ANTHRACITE COAL.


The rapid increase in the consumption of anthracite coal is indeed astonishing. The Philadelphia Commercial Herald states that this article was first brought from Lehigh as fuel, to tide water in 1820. The consumption from that period to 1824 was 9,501 tons; from 1824 to 1828 was 144,952 ; from 1828 to 1832 was 547,370 from 1832 to 1836 was 1,757,807-making the entire quantity in the whole 16 years, 2,489,000 tons, as giving an increased production of the second over the first period of 1600 per cent-of the third period over the second of upwards of 350 do-of the fourth period over the third of more than 345 do. At the same rate of increase the ensuing 4 years, it will amount to more than 6,000,000 tons.

A Law relating to Gaugers in the City of New-York.


Title I. The mayor, aldermen, and commonalty of the city of New-York in common council convened, do ordain as follows :


1. There shall be appointed by the common council, nine compe- tent and proper persons to be known as, and called gåugers, in and for the city of New-York, who shall hold their offices during the pleasure of the said common council.


2. No person shall exercise the office of gauger, by gauging wine, ale, cider, shrub, vinegar, oils, molasses, or saleable or exciseable li. quors, for any private person or persons, without having received an appointment from the common council, under a penalty of fifty dollars for every such offence.


3. The last preceding section shall not be construed to prevent any public officer appointed by this state from gauging, in the legal discharge of his official duties.


4. It shall be the duty of every guager, when required, to make a return of the several quarter casks, barrels, hogsheads, and tierces gauged by him, and to mark on each vessel with some durable mate- rial in legible figures, the quantity contained therein, together with the initial of the name of the gauger.


5. If any gauger shall neglect to attend in person to the duties of his office, (except in cases of sickness or other disability) or shall ask, demand or receive any greater compensation for his services than is allowed in and by the second title of this law, he shall forfeit and pay for every such offence the sum of fifty dollars


6. The several gaugers who have been appointed by the common council since the first day of May last, shall continue to discharge the office of gaugers in and for the city and county of New-York, during the pleasure of the said common council, and shall be con- sidered amenable to all the provisions of this law.


Title II.


1. The gaugers in and for the city of New-York, shall be entitled to demand and receive for their services the following fees, namely :
