PUBLISHERS' NOTICE.

THE object of the present volume is, to place within the reach of Mer- chants, Manufacturers, and Professional men, better facilities for con- ducting Epistolary Correspondence, making and receiving Consignments, and the purchase and sale of Goods.

More than eight months since we commenced preparing a BUSINESS DIRECTORY for each of the New England States. We were then, as now, strong in the belief that the Mercantile and Manufacturing Inter- ests of New England demand the annual publication of such a volume. No work of the kind, embracing an equal extent of territory, has ever been attempted. In the plan and arrangement of our work we have been obliged to launch our bark on unknown seas, without chart, compass, or the labors of others for a guide. Such a course has subjected us to all the difficulties, obstacles, and delays, necessarily attending all new un- dertakings.

All the information for our work has been collected by the most com- petent men to be procured, who have carefully canvassed every town and city, and called personally on those whose names are inserted in the work. Many of the names to be found in the work have been procured by a direct journey of ten, fifteen, and even twenty miles, and in many instances at an expense of several dollars.

By the special request of a large portion of the business community, the work has from time to time been extended much beyond the original plan. This has caused some months delay in its publication, but has greatly increased its value.

Particular attention is invited to the style of maps given in the work, which; taken in connexion with the Tabular Gazetteer of Towns by Counties, is thought much more convenient and valuable for business purposes than any now in use.

The orthography has been made as correct as possible, under the cir- cumstances. But the orthography of names is so difficult, that we shall not be surprised to learn of some inaccuracies. Corrections in the orthography will be made from year to year, and no pains nor expense will be spared to render the work correct in every department.

In our intercourse with the business portion of the community we have found many strong friends who have afforded us much valuable aid and assistance, for which we return our sincere thanks. Hoping that the anticipations of all may be more than realized in the first volume of our Directory, we submit it to the public for inspection.
