The judiciary powers of the State are vested in a Supreme Court, con- sisting of six judges. Each County Court is composed of one judge of the Supreme Court, and two assist- ant judges for each county. All of the judges and justices are chosen annually by the legislature.
Public Institutions.
Common Schools .- In the State there are 2,276 school districts ; and 79,757 children between the ages of 4 and 18 years. Public moneys raised for schools, $71,177 27,-ave- aging $1 18 to each scholar. In 1845, the school fund was abolished, to pay the State debt.
Vermont Asylum for the Insane .- Wm. H. Rockwell, M. D., Superin- tendent. The buildings are now en- larged to accommodate 300 patients. Whole number admitted since the opening of the institution, about 1,100; of these, more than 42 per cent. have recovered. Died, about 8 per cent. of the whole number ad- mitted.
Terms of admission, $2 00 per week for the first six months, and $1 50 afterwards. Where insanity is connected with epilepsy or paralysis, $2 50 will be charged. Patients not received for a less term than three months. Patients from other States received on the same terms.
