Public Institutions.
Retreat for the Insane, Hartford. John S. Butler, M. D., Physician and Superintendent ; number of patients for the year 1847, 211 ; males 95; fe- males 116; discharged during the year 89; of which 40 recovered, 24 improved, 13 not improved, and 12 deaths. This Institution was open- ed in 1824. Whole number of pa- tients since admitted, 1,764; whole number of patients discharged, 1,642, of which 942 have recovered, 557 have improved, and 143 have died.
Terms of admission, to those be- longing to the State, $3 per week ; those belonging to other States, $3 50 per week. For patients be- longing to the State, in the centre building and a separate attendant, $10 per week. Those not residents of the State are taxed $2 extra.
Patients are not adınitted for a less term than three months, and pay- ment for that term must be made in advance. For admissions apply to the superintendent.
American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb, Hartford .- Lewis Weld, A. M., Principal. Number of pupils for the year ending May, 1848, 203; 104 inales, 99 females ; 18 are sup- ported by their friends. 30 by the State of Maine, 22 by New Hamp- shire, 17 by Vermont, 75 by Massa- chusetts, 5 by Rhode Island, 28 by Connecticut, and 8 by South Caro- lina. The cost for each pupil, board, washing, fuel, tuition, and inciden- tal expenses is $103 per ann. Pay- ments must be made six months in advance.
State Prison, Wethersfield .- Eli- sha Johnson, Warden, Archibald Welch, Physician, David Miller, Chaplain. Whole number of con- victs, March 1848, 150 ; 136 males- whites 102, colored 34 ; 14 females- whites 8, colored 6. The males are employed in making cabinet work, cutlery, and shoes, and the females in washing, mending, and binding boots ; 17 are under sentence for life. Since 1827, there has been 1,236 commitments; 865 for offences against shares, 4000; par value, 50.
