THIS Mufeum was eftablifhed by the Tammany Society in June, 1790, for the exprefs purpofe of collecting together every thing relative to the hiftory of this country; all literary publications that refpect the civil, political, or religious concerns of America, whether ancient or modern, whether publifhed in this or any other country ; American publications of a literary nature, gazettes, magazines, or other peri- odical pieces ; and likewife every production of na- ture, or of art, either of this or any other country; to accomplifh which purpofe part of the funds of the fociety have hitherto been applied.
The profperity and fuccefs of this inftitution muft, however, in a great meafure, depend on the voluntary contributions of a generous public, particularly as it refpects curiofities; and although yet in its infancy, the Mufeum contains already many articles in the hiforical and natural lines, deferving public attention.

As almoft every individual poffeffes fome article which in itfelf is of little value, but which, in a col- lective view, becomes of real importance, the patrons of this inftitution folicit the attention and aid of their fellow citizens and others, towards forming a collec- tion which promifes fair to become an object of pub- lic utility. The articles and names of the doners are carefully regiftered in a book kept for that purpofe.
The corporation of this city, ever difpofed to en- courage patriotic undertakings, and favourably im- preffed with the importance of the prefent, have ge- neroufly granted to the Tammany Society, or Co- lumbian Order, the Exchange, in Broad-ftreet, for the ufe of the Mufeum.
The Mufeum is under the direction of feven truf- tees, annually elected by the fociety out of their body, who are authorifed to folicit donations from the pub- lic. Any articles which may be forwarded to either of them will be thankfully received, and carefully preferved.
