GUIDE

TO THE

STREETS,' AVENUES, LANES, COURTS, PLACES, &c.,

MENTIONED IN

SMITH'S BROOKLYN DIRECTORY,

( EASTERN DISTRICT), FOR 1855-6.

NOTE .-- The numbering of the streets &c., of the city is very incomplete and irregular, the same number, in seve- ral instances, occurring in two or more places in the same street or avenue. As a rule, the numbers run eastward and northward from the opening of the street or avenue ; the exception being as to the streets and avenues south of Broadway, which number southwest and southeast. The streets, avenues, &c., that are given in the Guide, are arranged in alphabetical order, and any particular one can be found by observing that order when looking. The number of the building at one corner of each crossing, or abutting street, or avenue, is given when there is any; when there is none at the corner, the one nearest it is given. In most cases the crossing or abutting streets, &c. named, are those opened at the street or avenue under the head of which they are given.

ABBREVIATIONS AND SIGNS .- Al. or al. for alley ; Av. or av. avenue; bet. between; Ct. or ct. court; E. east E. Dist. Eastern District ; G, P. Greenpoint ; Pl. or pl. place ; rd. road; S. south; St. street; W. west ; * denotes that the number is not at the corner but near it ; [ or ] denotes that the street or whatever, does not cross, but begins or ends (on the right or left) at the street or avenue, under head of which it is named.
