GUNDRY'S NEW AND ORIGINAL SYSTEM

Of Instruction in DOUBLE ENTRY BOOK-KEEPING, printed and copy-righted, compiled by Principal, expressly for this College, being the result of twenty years' experience, as an Account and Teacher.

It has been uniformly conceded by both Accountants and Commercial INSTRUCTORS, that system of Teaching Accounts is the best extant, and will save to the student, weeks of time labor, over all other methods.

Its great superiority must at once be apparent, over the "round-about " tedious and un tisfactory process of learning from written cards or manuscripts, without rules or explanations pursued in other similar schools.

It received the First Premium at the late United States Fair, and a complimentary notice f a committee of practical Accountants, to whom it was referred.

THE COURSE OF STUDY

PREFACE.

The present is the TWELFTH annual issue of WILLIAMS' CINCINNATI DIRECTORY, and in present- ing the Volume to the public, the Compiler embraces the opportunity to return his thanks to subscribers to the work, for the patronage extended by them, and also to citizens generally for the kind and courteous manner in which they have co-operated with the Publisher, and furnish- ed the information necessary for the preparation of the Directory.

The alteration of the time of the publication of our Volume from the month of January to June, was made by the Publisher under the impression that an unusual number of changes in the business locations and residences of our citizens would occur at the commencement of the present Spring. We are now satisfied that we have been enabled by the postponement to make our work much more useful to the public, as the new locations and residences are, in almost every case, noted in the present volume.

Although we can truly state that the City has been thoroughly and faithfully canvassed, square by square, in every part, to obtain the information for the present volume, and that great care and diligence have been exercised to detect errors and prevent omission, yet we can not claim that the work is perfect. Experience has taught us that in the collection, arrangement, and printing of FIFTY or SIXTY thousand names, with numbers attached, errors and omissions will occur in despite of the efforts of the most careful and scrutinizing persons. But the Compiler feels well assured that in the present instance he has as fully overcome these difficulties, and rendered the Directory as reliable as it is practicable to make a work of the kind, and confidently believes that the present volume will be found by our citizens to contain as few mistakes as the Directory of any City of the same population in the United States.

In addition to the usual matter contained in our Directory, we have introduced in this issue a . "Railroad and Transportation Department," containing information, which will be found of interest to the public. It was prepared for us by S. W. CHAPMAN, Esq., to whom we tender our thanks for the favor conferred.

The "List of United States Post Offices," which we publish in the present volume, although not satisfactory to ourselves, is the best we could prepare under existing circumstan- ces. The names of Post Offices in the Southern States are retained, as postal communication has already been renewed at various points South, and will undoubtedly be soon extended to all the offices where it has been temporarily suspended, and in that case, although somewhat imper- fect, the list will be of use to our citizens.

It is important that all persons using the Directory should consult our list of "Alterations and Removals," as the latest changes are therein noted, and the names of all citizens inserted, that could not be obtained early enough to be arranged in their proper places in the body of the work.

We return our thanks to the Press of the City for notices given during the canvass, and shall aim in each succeeding issue to make the CINCINNATI DIRECTORY more worthy of commenda- tion.

Cincinnati City Guide.

Street Directory.

The STREET DIRECTORY is simply an ALPHABETICAL arrangement of Streets, Alleys, etc., with a sufficient portion of corner numbers attached to such as are of any considerable importance, for the purpose of aiding those who refer to it in becoming familliar with the system of numbering. It will be found by citizens as well as strangers to be a practical guide to the different parts of the City, as far as it has yet been numbered.

EXPLANATIONS. - On streets commencing at and running directly from the River, or others running in the same direction, the ODD numbers are on the West. and the EVEN on the East side of the street, commencing at the River or such other point as the street may commence. On streets crossing Main, the onD numbers are on the South, and the EVEN on the North side of the street, commencing at and running East and West from Main, thus dividing each into two distinct streets, distinguished by prefixing EAST or WEST to the name. All others running in a similar direction are numbered in the same manner, commencing at the point nearest to Main and running East or West according to the direction ot the same. In a very few instances two streets will be found to have the same name, one of them generally in the suburbs, not numbered and of but little consequence-to such A* is prefixed.

In designating the CORNER numbers we have used onD numbers entirely, except where streets commence at or end upon the side where the EVEN numbers belong.
