Home building in this big property started in the summer of 1916. Before the spring of 1917 a score of homes were built or under construction representing an investment outlay of approximately $375,000. This demonstrates the character of the property and its merit in the eyes of the public.
A full third of the property is given over to park purposes. This public land includes property on both sides of Ottawa River which winds through Ottawa Hills for a distance of nearly three miles. Whell the tract is entirely built up, the effect will be that of a harmonious panorama of handsome homes set in the forested up- lands that look down from both sides of the river. The parked area will contain golf links, tennis courts, playgrounds for children. and rest and recreation centers. Six lakes will furnish boating and bath- ing. There will be tea pavilions. club- houses and similar structures.
No business can ever invade the tract. At its entrance a pretentious Civic Centre is being erected by the company. Here will be housed in artistic buildings all the stores, shops, fire-fighting equipment and other utilities that will serve the im- mediate needs of residents. Churches, schools and public halls also will have their location here.
Ottawa Hills will supply Toledo's demand for the highest class residential property. but it will not be exclusively the center of homes of wealth, Families of average ineans will be given the same opportunity and the same protection that goes to the costliest residence.
THE LAMSON BROTHERS COMPANY, TOLEDO, OHIO. The story of The Lam- son Brothers Company is a story of much human interest. It is a story which shows what strict integrity will accomplish, a story which tells what industry, fidelity to principle and "taking and giving" pub- lic confidence will do. It is a lesson from which a great moral can be drawn and young and old who read it. as "The Ohio Bine Book" is being consulted in schoois, public libraries, offices and homes, can draw inspiration as an example worthy of emulation and a stimulus to honest effort in business and public dealing.
The great magazines are constantly publishing articles about successful men from whom its readers may draw inspira- tion and the proposition is a commendable one as it teaches the rising generation . that honesty and integrity are invariably the foundation stones of success, and the history of Lamson Brothers Company
whose large establishment is located and occupies imposing quarters running on Summit and Adams Streets. Toledo, Ohio. is also one of inspiration.
The firm which originally consisted of Julins G. Lamson, C. Edgar B. Lamson and John D. R. Lamson, began business in Toledo. October 6. 1885. Each of sturdy honest stock. were schooled from boyhood that success comes from indefatigable ill- dustry, watching details, keeping abreast of the times and serving the public weil. Backed by practical business training these qualities were a large part of the :: assets as they opened their first con - paratively small store at what is now 319 Summit Street. Toledo. In less tha' four years they bought the S. H. Frank Company starting with only a forty foot frontage and at this time Mr. C. Edgar B. Lamson, who held an important posi- tion in Columbus, severed his connections there and became personally connected with the Toledo business. The history of the house has been one of rapid growthi and constantly increasing trade which with the growth of Toledo and develop- ment of the surrounding territory they have promptly met by expansion. Pass- ing over further details in this directi. n. by tearing down older buildings and adding to their quarters, they now occupy at Summit and Adam streets in the heart of Toledo, a fine establishment. and are ranked among the largest and most prosperous dry goods houses in Ohio.
The present firm name is "The Lamson Brothers Company" which was incor- porated February 1. 1905. and the personal sketches of Julius G. Lamson and C. Ed- gar B. Lamson appear in the proper place among the well-known business characters of the Buckeye State, else- where in the body of this work. John D. R. Lamson having been called by death in 1915. Such citizenship is worth emulat- ing. As an illustration, the phrase they use in their daily advertising "If it is in our ad it's so" is taken by their thou- sands of customers, including a large mail order following, at its face value and an element of confidence which only time can establish and which is not measured by a money value.
THE BUCKEYE PAINT AND VARNISH CO., TOLEDO, OHIO. Confidence is the foundation stone of success in any line of endeavor. Any business which has the confidence of its patrons and the peo- ple has an asset which is bound to bring success when it is backed by cnergy. alert- ness and honest application to the matter at hand. It is this confidence which is the key-stone of the success which has attended The Buckeye Paint & Varnish Co., through their long career and whose finely equipped factories are located at Fifteenth and Lucas Streets. Toledo.
They. have a long record behind them which shows an unbroken chanter of ill- tegrity, square dealing and making good with their patrons. Dealers who handle their goods know they are backed by quality and their best recommendations come from the consumers of their goods over a wide range of territory.
One of the greatest factors in this rec- ord is the integrity. broad-gauged ideas and energy of the man who has built up the business and has been , at the hellil ever since its organization-Mr. Peter F. Whalen, President of the company.
One of the leaders of The Buckeye Paint & Varnish Company is their re- nowned product-Buckeye "Crys-tal-Lac." one of the finest wood finishes ever placed on the market. They manufacture
