was organized from a battalion intended as a nucleus for the 6th Ohio Cavalry. It was ordered to the " far West" in April, 1862, and arrived at Fort Leavenworth soon after, when the greater portion were sent 700 miles farther on to Fort Laramie ; then began a campaign, which for hardship, privation, exposure and all that goes to make a sol- dier's life uncomfortable, was not experi- enced by any other body of volunteer troops from this or any other State. The reader will find a good account of all this in Reid's " Ohio in the War."

The family of the late Capt. Thomas P. Clarke are residents of this city, and were, during a portion of the time, with him in the field. From them a narrative of the de- tails has been obtained, but the limits of this article forbid any extended use of the same. Capt. Levi M. Rinehart was killed by the Indians, while on duty with this corps, and through the personal efforts. of Cant. Clarke the body was cared for, and by him brought to friends here, and buried

Its com- manding officer was the first to enter the fort, and. with his own hands, hauled down the first rebel flag the regiment ever saw. The Fifty-eighth took part in the battles of Pittsburg Landing, Helena. Milliken's Bend. Haines' Bluff, Greenville. Johnson's Land- ing, Arkansas Post and Grand Gulf. It served as marine guard on board the iron- clads of the Mississippi Rotilla. and was in that portion which run the gantlet of the Vicksburg batteries on the night of the loth of April 1868. THE SEVENTY-FIRST O. V. I.

was organized at Troy, Miami County, Ohio, in February, 1862. Rodney Mason, of Springfield, who had served with the Second Ohio, three months, regiment, as Lieutenant Colonel, was appointed to the Coloneley. The history of this corps is a particularly varied one, vet always full of all that goes to make a soldier's record good. During its engagement at and near Pitts- burg Landing, no regiment on earth could have behaved more gallantly. For a long period the Seventy-first was charged with the special duty of protecting the Louis- ville & Nashville Railroad, during which it was engaged in many a tedious round with the bordes of guerrillas, which infested the lines of communications. No more thank- less task can be assigned to soldiers than this. It took an active part in the battle of Nashville, and there lost one-third of its nuumber in killed and wounded : it was also in the battles of Franklin and Jonesboro. After this it was sent to Texas, and remained until it was ordered to Camp Chase, where it mustered ont in January, 1866. This work is not the place to express opinions ; if it were. much might be said of the injus- tice rendered this brave body of soldiers.

HISTORY OF CLARK COUNTY.

TENTH OHIO BATTERY

was organized and mustered into the service on the 2d of March. 1562. It formed a part of the reserve forces during the siege at Corinth in the spring of 1862. In October, 1862, the Tenth held an unsupported posi- tion just north of Corinth, and by a vigor- ous service of "grape and cannister " mowed down three columns of rebels, when it was obliged to retire. to avoid the flank- ing movements of the enemy. In this affair, three men were wounded, and Will- iam H. Bretney lost his horse. While at Fort Rausom, one of the guns broke its stock and another its axle ; these were re- paired by Artificers Wheeler and Cline, while under fire from the rebel sharpshoot- ers. The battery was "all over the South," and made the march from Clifton to Ac- worth, a distance of about five hundred miles, in twenty-four days, without losing a man. It was placed in position in front of Kenesaw Mountain, on the 10th of June. 1864, and was engaged every day for a month, in that position, and at Nickajack Crock, after various other marches and rounds of post und garrison duty, the battery Was mustered oft at Camp Dennison, on the 17th of July, 1865. and discharged on the 21st.
