Full laboratory courses have been provided in operative and prosthetic technics, chemistry, Metallurgy, histology, pathology and bacteriology, and systematic, practical instruction in the examination and treatment of patients in the general and special clinics of the school.

ASTORIA

Astoria, appropriately called the Venice of America, is situated at the mouth of that mighty river whose basin comprises three hundred thousand square miles. Astoria's location as a city is unique. With unlimited resources Astoria holds the key to the commerce of the Northwest. It is not Portland, but it is to Portland what Liverpool is to London.

It takes no seer to foretell the future of Astoria. It is one over which the Sun of Promise shines brightly. Situ- ated on the north side of a peninsula about one and one- fourth miles in width and two and one-half miles long. As- toria has a water frontage of over five miles and connection by rail with the best summer resorts in the country.

What is it that is called good that this wonderful Columbia basin does not produce ? Its resources are simply boundless. Gold, silver, coal, iron and copper are here in abundance. Grain and fruit in variety and profusion. One would think such an aggregation enough dower for one section, but what shall be said of a city where, added to all these. is the wonderful sahnon industry which amounts in round numbers to two million dollars annually and makes Astoria the salmon center of the world? Nor has this industry by any means reached its height, but is capable of almost unlimited expansion.

The lumber interests, too, are almost more than can be stated. The lumber of the lower Columbia River, is the best of its kind and there is an estimated annual output of the famous Oregon pine of seventy billion feet.

In addition to all these, the dairy interest of Astoria, is one which cannot be overlooked. The climate permits the continuous growing of grasses which furnish fresh food for cattle the year round. This makes the milk rich and furnishes the best butter, a market for which in unlimited quantity is here. There is no better opening for money 312

ASTORIA CITY DIRECTORY.

making than in this same line. A perpetual demand, and opportunity for supplying it with the best products.

The climate of Astoria is peculiarly equable. Intense summer heat and winter cold are alike unknown.

In addition to all the natural resources of Astoria it is the ocean port of the City of Portland. Astoria's harbor is in reality the best in the West, it being the only deep fresh water port on the Pacific Coast. When the appropriations made by Congress have done the work which they are to do, at the entrance of the Columbia River, a permanent channel of the greatest draft will be secured and a new era for prosperity and enterprise will dawn upon Astoria.

The population of Astoria has steadily increased until today it can claim 11,000 people. With unsurpassed and in many directions unparalleled advantages, Astoria has but to put forth energy and business enterprise to make it what it has already begun to be, a city of great commercial im- portance and wealth.
