CHINOOK.

Situated on Baker's Bay near the mouth of the Columbia river, in Pacific county. Wash., eight miles northwest of Astoria, from which it is reached three times a week by the steamer R Miler, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It is a thriving and beautiful town of energetic people. Its population, including surrounding settlements, is about 800. The public spirit of the citizens is shown by the manner in which they support the local paper, the Chinook Observer, published by Hibbert & Payne, it is safe to say 95 per cent of the entire population are subscribers. The principal industry is salmon fishing. It is here that a large per cent of the Royal Chinook salmon are caught. There are two churches, Methodist and Swedish Lutheran, a school em- ploying three teachers, a fish hatchery operated by the state, several large merchantile stores, the principal ones are conducted by S J Jones and Samuel J Baseel, three saloons, two of which are run by F O Gaither and Julius Jensen. No policeman or City Jail. When a street needs repairing. a sidewalk to be built or any improvement needed by the community every one turns out and does his share. It is one of the many delightful summer resorts about the month of the Columbia. The town supports two excellent hotels presided over by Mr E G Bundy, Bundy Ilouse, and Mrs S R Coleman, Coleman House. Mr JJ E Dalton is JJustice of the Peace and also writes fire insurance. Stage daily to Ilwaco, 8 miles distant. Long distance telephone. Mrs Ellen T Barrows, postmaster.

ILWACO.

Population 1000. Pacific County. An incorporated town of the fourth class, on Baker's Bay, an arm of the Columbia river, 2 1-2 miles northwest and above the mouth of the river; 1 1-2 miles south of Sea View; 4 miles from Long Beach, the great northwest seaside summer resort, and 50 miles southwest of South Bend, the county seat. Astoria, Ore., is the main and most convenient banking point owing to daily connections and transportation by the steamer Nahcotta of the I R & N Co's line. Ilwaco is the southern terminus of the I R & Co's lines, running north- ward to Nahcotta on Willapa Harbor, and there connect- ing with the steamboat line to South Bend daily during the year, except Sunday during the winter months. Ilwaco has two churches, namely, the First M E and the First Presbyterian, which both have auxiliary societies; . it also has the following fraternal societies: Occident Lodge, A F & A M, which meets on the 1st and 3d Friday evenings in each month : Ilwaco Lodge I O O F, which meets every Wed- nesday evening; Ilwaco Lodge A O U W, which meets every Saturday evening: Woodmen of the World, which meets every Monday evening, and the Artisans, which meets Tues- day evening. The various fraternal orders erccted in 1897 a hall at a cost of over $6000. It has town hall, a large public school of 4 departments and owing to the pres- ent crowded condition, the question is now being consider- ed of building an additional school house. The town has

one weekly newspaper, the Pacific County Journal; also a saw mill has just been completed, and an electric light plant for lighting the town is being installed. In 1903 P J McGowan & Sons erected and operated a large salmon can- nery and recently, in view of the N Pac Ry extending its line down the north bank of the Columbia river through to the Ocean beach, parties have secured options on locations for cold storage plants. The principal industry is salmon fishing but during the last two years, owing to the great de- mand for spruce timber for paper making, several logging outfits have been established and give employment the whole year. There is a daily stage to Chinook. 8 miles dis- tant, fare 50 cents. also telephone connections with all points : express. Pacific. Ilwaco was named after the the old resident Chinook chief, Elwaco, the change in the first letter of the name being made when it was first made a government postoffice. Owing to its being the port and ship- ping outlet to the North Beach and Willapa Harbor local- ities, together with the seaside resort, it is, with its local in- dustries and prospects, becoming of more than common im- portance. Within the last year a fine plank road has been built to the military reservation and thence by the govern- ment to Fort Canby and North Head lighthouse, making it one of the most desirable resorts in the United States. The Bear River Mountains, about 8 miles to the east, with its numerous streams, afford fine hunting and fishing, and our summer seasons offer the most enjoyable climate in the world. The leading business firms of Ilwaco are C E Ker- lee of The Aberdeen Store who carries a complete stock of general merchandise. etc: Grable & Collings conduct one of the leading grocery stores, they also handle flour and feed, school books, ete; Wm B Hawkins serves his customers with fresh meats, fish and game; Thomas F Robinson, dentist, has a complete and up-to-date dental office where he is pre- pared to do first-class work. Ben Wise & Co are in a posi- tion to supply their trade with the latest styles of clothing,
