ASTORIA

ASTORIA, THE NEXT BIG CITY OF THE PACIFIC COAST, occupies a picturesque and commanding position at the Mouth of the Columbia River, and is by every matural right OREGON'S LEADING SEAPORT.

This interesting City has had a place in American His- tory for a little more than a Century, but it is entitled to far more than Historical Glory in the fact that it is one of the leading industrial Marts of Oregon, and a place that must grow in maritime prominence as the Pacific Coast of America de- velops in its relations with the rest of the world. Sitting at the gate of the High Seas and at the mouth of one of the larg- est and most important Inland Waterways not only of the Pacific Coast but of the entire American Continent; it is the natural meeting place of Trans-continental and Trans-Pacific Commerce, and its commanding importance must more and more be recognized.

Astoria is delightfully situated on a beautiful peninsula bounded on the North by the Great Columbia, and on the South and West by Young's River and Young's Bay. It's back country possesses a potential wealth that would read like a story from the Klondike if it could be reduced to figures.

The Harbor is one of only five deep-water Harbors on the

Lady Assistant PHONES-Office 97 -Residence 99 20 ASTORIA 1917-1918 POLK'S ASTORIA CITY AND entire Pacific Coast. It's position is ideal with reference to River, Rail and Ocean transportation. A glance at the map will show to the most casual observer that here is the only water-grade outlet for the commerce of the United States which crosses the Cascade and Coast Range Mountains to the Sea; and also to point out that for the shipping on the North Coast destined to European Ports via the Panama Canal, it is nearer by hundreds of miles on the Round trip than any of its competitors on either the Columbia River or Puget Sound. As ocean rates bid fair to remain high for some time after the close of the European War, this saving in distance traveled is going to be a tremendous handicap for other Ports to over- come.

Astoria's land locked harbor has more than twelve miles of deep water frontage, ample for the unlimited commerce and a safe anchorage for the fleets of the World. Its wharves are free from destruction by teredo and the fresh water in the river destroys the barnacles and other marine growths on shipping, thus saving the expense and delay of frequent dry- docking.

Astoria is, as well, the nearest port on the West Coast of America to the great markets of China, Japan, and the Philip- pine Islands, and must naturally claim its share of the vast trade sure to develop between these countries and the United States.

Within the last three years the Government Jetty work combined with the efficiency of the Government Dredger, the "Chinook," has produced an entrance at the Month of the Columbia River, a half mile wide and with a depth of from forty to forty-two feet at mean low tide, sufficient to carry the biggest ships afloat, and comparing with Ambrose Channel to New York Harbor with an average depth of thirty-five feet, removing once and for all the old bugaboo of the "Columbia River Bar" from the annals of Pacific Shipping.

This City at once so beautifully and so fortunately sit- uated has now a population of between 20,000 and 21,000 peo- ple and is fast growing.

The year 1916 marked the granting to Astoria of Termin- al Rates, placing this Port on a parity with Portland and the Ports on Puget Sound for the embarkation of the wealth pro- duced in the Inland Empire on its way to ultimate markets abroad. The granting of these rates by the Interstate Com- merce Commission marked the sure and final removal of As- Alex Fredrickson

toria from the "village-class," placing her among the cities of the Coast. In many instances the haul to Astoria is longer than to Seattle or Tacoma, but due to the natural advantages in the way of Railroad Grades, the difference in distance is outweighed.

The fishing Industry in Astoria, is one to be envied by towns ten times its population. During the fishing season em- ployment is given to about four thousand men, many of whom during the rush of fish in the Summer, catch three and four hundred dollars worth of fish in a single night. The Summer "clean ups" by many of the Astoria Fishermen would make many an Alaskan Gold Miner green with envy. The 1917 catch will bring about Ten Millions of Dollars in Cash, a per capita average for the entire population of $500.00 to $600.00.

Astoria is the center of the greatest timber district now remaining in the World. Within a radius of forty miles of Astoria stands 150.000.000,000 feet of the finest Fir and Spruce timber in the world. Many of the former great timber loca- tions of these United States were logged off when timber was a drug on the market and the wages of a man for a month then would not make a weeks pay for a modern Astoria Timber Worker. The added advantages of present high prices and wages need not be dwelt upon to understand how infinitely much more in Dollars and Cents Astoria will get for her re- sources.

Astoria is the financial center of the Lower Columbia District. Its four large and substantial banks have a wide reputation for strength and progressive methods. Some of the Banks average clearings in excess of two hundred million dollars annually, giving a definite idea of the magnitude of Astoria's Commerce even now.

Astoria is now the Home Port of the Great Northern Pa- cific Steamship Company who operate the finest steamers ply- ing on the Pacific. It is also the Pacific Terminal of the S. P. & S. Line of the Hill System, embodying at once the en- ergies of the Great Northern, Northern Pacific and Burling- ton Systems of Railroads. It is also reached by the Boat Lines of the Union Pacific System and by the San Francisco and Portland Steamship Company, together with numerons small- er ship lines.

Much has been done in Astoria in the past few years to make it the beautiful City it is destined to become. Miles of

streets have been paved, new additions to the Street Railway and its service, also an additional twenty million gallon reser- voir to the City Water System, and hundreds of houses have been built.

The starting of the McEachern Ship Building Plant on Youngs Bay was the start of Astoria as a Shipbuilding Cen- ter, with a big list of skilled workmen and a pay roll that will average when the three yards now located here reach their full production, of close to one hundred thousand dollars per month.

A final asset to Astoria is the fact that it is only an hour's drive through a beautiful country over paved roads to Clatsop Beach at Seaside, Cannon Beach lies ten miles beyond. Clat- sop and Cannon Beaches are fast becoming the Summer and Winter playgrounds for the people of the Pacific Northwest, with their commodious hotels open all the year around for tourists, and those seeking health and rest. The Golf Links at Gearhart being the largest on the Pacific Coast outside of Cali- fornia, and the delight of all those who enjoy this great out- door sport.
