EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY.


Fairmount avenue, opposite Twenty-first street.


The Eastern Penitentiary property covers about eleven acres of ground bounded by Fairmount avenue, Brown street, Corinthian avenue and Twenty-second street.


The corner-stone of the Penitentiary was laid May 22, 1823, and the institution was opened for prisoners October 22, 1829. There are ten acres of ground within the walls.

Tickets of admission can be procured from Inspec- tors only.


A member of a family cannot visit the penitentiary without a pass. A family pass is given with the ex- pectation that the members of the family will visit said institution together. Visitors are allowed every three months, except in emergencies, such as sick- ness, business transactions, when more frequent visits are allowed. Different members of a family cannot visit on different days of the month. Judges, Sheriffs, Recorders and Members of the Legislature are offici- ally recognized by law and can visit the penitentiary when so disposed. Members of Councils desiring to visit the institution, will be shown the courtesy of seeing whom they desire on application to the warden.
