The Decimal System of Numbering Houses.

One Ilundred Numbers are set apart for each square, and the initial

or starting-points are at the Delaware River and Market Street.

Persons can, by merely looking at the numbers on the Houses,

know how many squares they are from the Delaware or Market Street.

By-Streets are numbered as though they extended to the Delaware

or Market Street.

Numbers properly arranged, suggest distances to the mind; but improperly placed, they lead to confusion.

PHILADELPHIA: E. C. & J. BIDDLE & CO. PRINTED BY C. SHERMAN & SON. 1861.

PREFACE.

THE first Directory published in the City of Philadelphia was in 1785, by Franeis White, printed in large type and very brown paper, of duodecimo size, containing only 83 pages, with but little regard to alphabetical arrangement, the whole number of names falling short of 4000. The same year there seems to have been another published by John Macpherson, of the appearance of which I cannot say anything, not having a copy at hand. The next was issued in the year 1791, compiled by Clement Biddle, and, with the exception of an addition of sixty-four pages, presents about the same appearance as its predecessors. Sub- sequently, Directories were compiled by different individuals, at irregular periods, until 1802, when James Robinson published his first edition, continuing annually until 1811, and sub- sequently for 1816 and 1817. The Directory published in 1801, by Cornelius W. Stafford, was on the plan of a "Street Directory," but the experiment was never repeated. In sucees- sive years until 1828, Directories were published by sundry persons, embracing, as far as may be judged, the business portion and housekeepers only of the city and proximate districts.

In the year 1828, the late Robert Desilver issued the first edition of his City Directory, and annually afterwards until 1831, and then semi-annually till 1837, differing in no very essential points from the publications of others, except the omission of the repetition of similar names. The increase of the number of names was very inconsiderable, and cer- tainly not in proportion to the inerease of population.

The present compiler of McElroy's Philadelphia City Directory issued his first edition in 1837, confining the enumeration of names strictly to persons in business and housekeepers, printed on good paper and handsome type, making 252 pages, and upwards of 31,500 names, very greatly in excess of any other publieation of the same kind. Since then to the present year, 1861, MeElroy's Philadelphia City Directory has been published annually, except in 1838, when no City Directory was published, and during which year the present - compiler made an arrangement with the heirs of the late Mr. Desilver, for a satisfactory compensation in eash, to relinquish in his favor. The first edition of his Directory in 1837 contained only 31,500 names ; that of 1860 upwards of 1100 pages, and more than 160,000 names, together with a business department appropriately arranged.

The present edition for 1861 has been compiled with great care, under his own entire control and superintendence, the whole having been read and corrected by himself, and contains upwards of 165,000 names.

The canvassing, compiling, printing, proof-reading, and binding have been accomplished

PREFACE.

XXXV

in much less time than usual, the whole number of persons employed being upwards of 120; and it is therefore hoped that the Directory will, in some degree, be free from the usual changes made by removals during the time occupied in compiling and publishing.

This edition of the City Directory embraces the names of residents of the entire Consoli- dated City, from the extreme Northeast and Northwest to the Southern boundary on both sides of the river Schuylkill.

There will be found, for the convenience of reference, a General Index, an Index to Advertisements, and one to Miscellaneous Record.

The usual difficulties have been encountered in this publication, not the least of which is that of obtaining correct information when the canvassers call from door to door. In almost every instance, at private dwellings, the only source through which this information is obtained being the domestics in attendance at the time. Indeed, the canvassers are often surprised to meet with so much reluctance on the part of both private persons and others to afford them the proper facilities for obtaining correct statements for the Directory.

The compiler begs to present the twenty-fourth edition of his City Directory to an indul- gent public, with the hope that it may meet with general approval.

The amount of labor and money expended on the Philadelphia City Directory as now presented, cannot be appreciated by the public, and the subscriber hopes the income from subscriptions and sales will approximate in some degree to the expenditure.
