BOARD OF INSPECTORS OF THE COUNTY PRISON.

By an Act of Assembly of Pennsylvania, of May 13th, 1856, directs that the Board of Inspec- tors of the Philadelphia County Prison shall con-


sist of eleven members, and shall be appointed to wit :


"That the Inspectors of the County Prison shall be appointed, five by the Supreme Court of Penn- sylvania, three by the District Court of the County of Philadelphia, and three by the Court of Com- mon Pleas of said County, who shall enter upon duty on the first Monday of July next, to serve for one year, and annually thereafter, the vacan- eies in said Board shall be filled as aforesaid ; they shall neither be members of the bar, nor officers or clerks of, or under any of said courts."

Superintendent of Police and Fire Alarm Tele- graph is elected by Councils in joint convention, at the first meeting in the month of March, for one year (annually) .

The Superintendent is, under the directions of the Mayor and Chief Engineer of the Fire De- partment, to manage for its appropriate use, the Police and Fire Alarm Telegraph. The Superin- tendent appoints one Assistant, and the Mayor details policemen as telegraph operators for the different stations.

tions denotes the number of the station that gives the alarm ; thus-one tap, a pause, and three taps, another pause, and five taps -- 1-3-5- indicates that the alarm came from box No. 135.


The State House and the Fire Alarm Bells in the several districts will strike the number of the Fire District twice, and the direction four times ; each bell striking the direction from itself. Shonl d the fire be in the vicinity of the State House, the bells in the boxes will ring incessantly.


In cases of general alarm, requiring the ser- vices of the entire department. the bells will be rung incessantly, in quick succession, after having first signified the district in which the fire is raging.
