PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER ARTILLERY.

LIGHT BATTERY "B," PENNSYLVANIA VOL- UNTEER ARTILLERY.

On the evening of April 27, 1898, in compliance with the orders of the Governor, Battery "B," National Guard of Pennsylvania, located at Pittsburgh, left that city and proceeded to Mount Gretna, Pa., for the purpose of volunteering in the United States Volunteer service in the war with Spain. The battery reported with six officers and sixty-seven men, and forty-nine men not members, but intended as recruits to be mustered into the United States service with the battery. The quota fixed for the battery as a United States Volun- teer organization was four officers and seventy-six men, and with this number the battery was on May Sth mustered into the United States service as Light Battery "B," Pennsylvania Volunteer Artillery. The battery remained at Mt. Gretna until May 18, 1898, when under orders from the War Department it proceeded to Camp Thomas, Chickamauga, Georgia, arriving there May 20th, and reported to Major General Brooke, commanding First Army Corps.

Orders were received from the War Department in June, 1898, directing that the battery be recruited to one hundred and seventy- three enlisted men. Ninety-five recruits were added to the organiza- tion June 26th. On July 16th the battery was ordered to Newport News, where it embarked on the transport "Roumania" for Porto Rico on July 27th. The transport ran aground off the Port of Guanica, the battery was disembarked and remained there for twelve hours, then received orders to proceed to Ponce and report to General Miles. After landing at Ponce, orders were received for the trans- port to proceed to Arroyo and the battery to report to Major Gen- eral Brooke. The battery arrived at Arroyo on August 4th; a detail of the battery built a wharf for unloading purposes and also built a bridge over a creek on the road to Guayama. The bridge was eighty-five feet long and substantially built. Camp was erected at Arroyo, where the battery remained one week, when the forward movement to Guayama began, the battery moving forward and occu- pying the city of Guayama on the evening of August 12th, and on August 13th passing through the city and over the mountain roads towards El Cayey, arriving at a point near the summit of the moun- tain at nine o'clock A. M. Here the enemy were entrenched. Major General Brooke directed that the battery be put in action front in echelon. The guns were loaded and the battery waited the com-

mand of General Brooke to open the engagement, which was ex- pected momentarily, when news was received that the Peace Pro- tocol had been signed and hostilities should cease. The battery remained in the mountains for some days, then returned to Guayama, went into camp and remained until August 23rd, when it was ordered to Ponce, there to take transport for New York City. On September 2nd all transportation, including horses, harness, mules and wagons, was turned over to the Quartermaster's Department, and on Sep- tember 7th the battery embarked on the transport "Concho," which sailed from Ponce on September 8th, and after a rough voyage ar- rived in New York on September 15, 1898, and were there met by the Governor of Pennsylvania. The ordnance was under orders of the Chief of Ordnance sent to arsenals at Rock Island, Illinois, and Watervliet, New York. The battery arrived in Pittsburg on the evening of September 18th and was enthusiastically received by the citizens. Each man was furloughed for sixty days, and on Novem- ber 17, 1898, the battery was mustered out of the United States service as of date of November 27, 1898.
