FOURTEENTH REGIMENT PENNSYLVANIA


FOURTEENTH REGIMENT, PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY.


Tle Fourteenth Regiment, National Guard of Pennsylvania, was composed of eight companies, five of which, A, B, E, F and G, were located in the city of Pittsburg; the others in Allegheny county. C al Oakdale Station, I at Elizabeth and K at Carnegie. The regi- ment in compliance with the orders of the Governor left Pittsburg ou the night of April 27, 1898, for Mt. Gretna, where it arrived at 10 o'clock A. M., April 28, 1898. The regiment was reviewed by the Governor on May 3rd, 1898, and immediately thereafter the roll of the regiment was called and the officers and men given the oppor- tunity to volunteer for service in the war with Spain. The various companies were at once recruited to seventy-eight officers and en- listed men, and on May 12th, 1898, the regiment was mustered into the United States service as the Fourteenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Vol- unteer Infantry.


The regiment remained at Mt. Gretna, Pa., until June 12th, when in compliance with orders from the War Department it proceeded to Fert Mott, N. J. Companies E and F were detached and under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Graham, were stationed at Fort Delaware, Delaware. The regiment was subsequently recruited to 100 enlisted men and three officers for each company.


On July 26th in compliance with Special Orders No. 156, Headquar. ters Department of the East, dated July 15th, Companies I and K, stationed at Fort Mott, changed station with Companies E and F stationed at Fort Delaware. The regiment remained at the stations above mentioned until September 3, 1898, when pursuant to orders it proceeded to Camp George G. Meade, at Middletown, Pa., and was shortly afterwards assigned to the Second Brigade, First Division, Second Army Corps. While in camp at Middletown the command participated in the Peace Jubilee Celebration in the city of Phila- deiphia, October 27, 1898.


Pursuant to General Orders No. 137, Headquarters Second Army Corps, dated November 7, 1898, the regiment on November 14th pro- ceeded by rail to Summerville, South Carolina, via Harrisburg, Pa., Washington D. C., Richmond, Virginia, and Columbia, South Caro- lina, arriving at Summerville, South Carolina, 11.30 A. M., Novem- ber 16th, 1898. The entire Second Brigade, First Division, Second Army Corps, composed of the Fourteenth Pennsyl- rania, Third Connecticut and Ninth Battalion, Ohio (Colored),

had been transferred from Camp Meade to Summerville, South Caro- lina. Colonel William J. Glenn, of the Fourteenth Pennsylvania, was placed in command of the Brigade, and retained command until re- lieved by Brigadier General Watres. The regiment remained at Summerville, South Carolina, until mustered out of the service on February 28th, 1899.
