GOVERNOR'S TROOP,

GOVERNOR'S TROOP, PENNSYLVANIA VOLUN- TEER CAVALRY.

-

The Governor's Troop, a cavalry organization of the National Guard of Pennsylvania, and located at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in compliance with the orders of the Governor, proceeded to Mount Gretna, Pennsylvania, on April 28, 1898, for the purpose of volun- teering as part of the quota of volunteers to be furnished by the State of Pennsylvania in the war with Spain, and was mustered into the United States Volunteer service as the Governor's Troop, Penn- sylvania Volunteer Cavalry, on May 13, 1898, with a total strength of three officers and sixty enlisted men. . The Troop continued in cam]. at Mount Gretna after muster-in. On June 13th forty recruits were added, making the strength three officers and one hundred enlisted men.

The volunteer cavalry organizations in the United States service from Pennsylvania were the First Troop, Philadelphia City Cav- alry, Captain John C. Groome; the Sheridan Troop, Captain C. S. W. Jones. and the Governor's Troop, Captain Frederick M. Ott. These three Troops remained at Mount Gretna after muster-in and were formed into a squadron by Captain Groome, who by virtue of date of muster was the senior officer and who assumed command.

On July 7th the squadron under orders from Headquarters, Depart- ment of the East, Governor's Island, New York, left Mount Gretna and proceeded to Camp Alger, Virginia, arriving July 8th, and was assigned to the Second Army Corps and attached to Corps Head- quarters. On July 24th the squadron left Camp Alger and pro- ceeded to Newport News, Virginia, arriving July 25th. The squadron was temporarily attached first to the Brigade of General Haines, and later to that of Brigadier General Fred. D. Grant for transportation to Porto Rico. The First Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry, was de- tached from the squadron and sailed for Porto Rico on July 28th on the transport "Massachusetts." On August 5th, the remaining Troops of the squadron, viz: the Sheridan Troop and the Governor's Troop, under Major C. S. W. Jones, embarked on the trans- port "Manitoba" for the port of Ponce, Porto Rico, arriving there August 10th. The transport ran aground just outside the harbor and the disembarkation was delayed several days. Upon landing the com- mand was ordered to report to Major General Miles, but before the order could be complied with hostilities ceased. Camp was estab-

lished in the town of Ponce, and the two troops remained there until August 28th, when camp was moved about five and one-half miles northwest of the town of Ponce, on the road to Adjuntas, the squad- ron being reported to Major General Wilson, commanding First Di- vision, First Army Corps.

The First Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry having rejoined the battalion, the entire battalion on September 3rd left Ponce on the transport "Mississippi" for New York city and arrived in the harbor of New York and disembarked at Jersey City on September 10th. The Governor's Troop proceeded by rail to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, arriving there during the night of September 10, 1898. The men were given a sixty day furlough. The Troop reassembled at Har- risburg November 11th for muster out, which was completed and the Governor's Troop, Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry, was mustered out of the United States service on November 18th as of date of No- vember 21, 1898.
