Maple Root Church of Coventry.
NOTE :- This church was organized Oct. 14, 1762 with 26 members. In 1763 they chose Timothy Greene for their pastor and William King for their Deacon. They were hoth ordained Sept. 1, 1763. Elder Greene removed to the west 1770 and died about 1780, and Elder Reuhen Hopkins, Pastor of the Scituate Church, served as their Pastor. Thomas Whaley was ordained Deacon June 25, 1776 and died Jan. 23, 1789. Sept. 12, 1782, Thomas Manchester was ordained Pastor of the Church. He died Sept. 1834. The church at this time (1782), contained ahout 75 members. The old house becoming decayed and insufficient to accommodate the congregation, the present house was erected in 1797, near the site of the old house and on the opposite side of the road. Pardon Tillinghast was appointed Deacon in Sept., 1811 and May 30, 1816, ordained Pastor of the Church, which now consisted of 300 members, which increased to 400 by 1821. Elder Tillinghast died Aug. 10, 1849.
The following list is copied from the "Book of Records" of the names of the members of the Coventry Church, placed in alphabetical order by Daniel C. Goff, Church Clerk, Oct., 1839, which church is now under the pastoral care of Pardon Tillinghast, Elder. The printed list below also contains names of a later date.
Mr. Charles W. Hopkins of Providence prepared from the Church Records a list of the members of this Church, which he published in the "Pawtuxet Valley Gleaner" in the summer and autumn of 1889. Knowing the careful and painstaking methods of Mr. Hopkins, the compiler of the following copy has no hesitation in following him, merely changing the families to one group and arranging each chron- .logically in order of their admission to the church.
