TRINITY CHURCH, NEWPORT.
Trinity Church Newport.
Trinity Church Newport ! What a wealth of historical infinences and associations cluster round the name. A church that boasts of its two hundredth anniversary this present year. A church that can point to a line of worshippers from the time of the early pioneers.
The first footing of the Church of England in New England was gained May 30, 1686 at Boston, where the Rev. Robert Radcliffe, who came over in a ship that brought a commission for Joseph Dudley as Governor of Massachusetts and landed in Boston May 15, 1686, read the liturgy the 30th as above stated. He made application for a place to hold public worship and was allowed the library room in the Town House. There he held the first service June 15 the following month and organized the first church.
Rhode Island was more backward. The first settlers were Baptists divided into various faiths. When the Friends came they met with great success, for here no persecutions were made for the crime of thinking and speaking as the ability, knowledge and conscience of the individual dictated. Free thought was encouraged in religious matters as well as in political, scientific and literary fields. Hence the door was open for the Church of England faith as it had been open before for the Friends. and Congregationalists.
Sept. 26, 1699. a petition was addressed to the Earl of Bellemont signed by 16 persons requesting a Minister be sent them. This petition. was forwarded by the Earl to the Board of Trade Oct. 24 and read. before them the 5th of January following. The Earl in forwarding the petition says :
"I send your Lordships the petition of several persons in Rhode Island for a Church of England Minister and a yearly maintainance for him. I hope your Lordships will please patronize so good a design and will obtain his Majesty's allowance of a competent maintainance for such a minister. It will be the means I hope to reform the lives of the people of that Island and make good Christians of 'em who are at pres- ent all in darkness.".
The ontgrowth of the matter was that the Venerable Society for the propogation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts in 1704 sent James Honey-

man as Minister to Rhode Island who continued to be the Minister until his death July 2, 1750.
The Church was very fortunate. in having so able a man for its first settled Pastor as it was fortunate in having his able counsels for such a long period. The Doctor was fortunate in his administration and happy in seeing his charge grow from a small beginning into a powerful and influential society. It must be conceded that this Society has exerted a powerful influence for lasting good in this city. Many of its members have been scholars and familiar with the best literaturc of the day. They were the first to suggest a Public Library and first to encourage the study of history and science. It speaks well and in our opinion (if a historian may be pardoned for expressing one) no higher tribute can be erected to the memory of these sainted names than the one they have themselves erceted by establishing the Public Library, the Classic School, and Reading of the English and modern classic. not neglecting the Latin and Grecian models. When these men built on these lines they built strong and on rock bottom. The Bible in our opinion is of no worth and cannot be for any lasting good to any people unless the mind be prepared to receive it. In other words the open Bible must have a mind educated to read and understand it or else its teachings can have no effect. This is the secret power of Protestantism and what has made the Protestant Powers of Europe what they are today, i. e. the mind educated to a standard to understand. Contrast these powers with those of Southern Europe nnder another system, and estimate how much the open Bible has done for these people of the rank and file. All this only illustrates the fact that the ground has got to be prepared to receive the seed. It is here that our Government, planted, cherished, protected and encouraged under this system of preparation, has blossomed into the power that it has and wields the intellectual strength of today. Our libraries are a wonder to the world, and the fact that our Public Libra- ries of today contain more volumes than all the rest of the world put together is something to be proud of. Let me pay then this tribute to the memory of the early Pioneers of this church, that they in their hum- ble but praiseworthy beginning made it possible in a great degree that our humble self could have a chance to read and study, and to sit at the feet of the world's sages to listen and draw inspiration from these in- spired minds.
It has been a happy inspiration to note these grand and noble works for the uplifting of man, and speaks well for a community that enconraged it. It is also a source of congratulation to record the fact that this Church has been very fortunate in having a historian who spared himself no pains in order to secure facts and to write the annals from the year 1698 to 1892.
George Champlain Mason in leaving this published History to pos- terity has erccted to his own memory a worthy memorial. The reader

who is curious to learn the history of this Church can find in the volumes of Mr. Mason much of interest and much of instruction. He has fol- lowed the official record and has made plain to his reader the spirit and interest of the lines quoted. Very wisely he has devoted a large space to the historic first pastorate, in many instances going into detail. Again he very wisely incorporated facts regarding the original members that will be valued by the genealogical reader. Besides Mr. Mason's Annals there are several sketches in works written of Newport and numerous pictures of the Church Building. The picture of Dr. Honeyman graces the first volunie, and this picture has been prodneed also in other publi- cations so that the face of the venerable teacher is familiar to the gen- eral reader living in Newport or vicinity.
The copy of records which is printed in this volume was made by the late Dr. Henry E. Turner. We print the record as made by the Doctor, and will, if spared, and no unforeseen event prevents, continue these records in another volume. We will say here that the Doctor's system was strictly chronological under each letter. Our system is first alphabetical with the family name, and second chronological with the mat- ter presented. It will be seen therefore by the reader when we reach the name of Arnold, Brenton, Clarke, Cranston, Davis, Easton, and so down the list that the carliest or first entry stands first, and tl.e name is not dropped until every entry down the list in the record is given. Then follows the next name under the letter next below the one cited above treated the same. This is our system. The Doctor's was, if Ayres was the first name in A he would use it first, and if a dozen other names were sandwiched chronologieally in between this, then the various entries in Ayres would have as many different places, hence the reader. has to glance through the whole letter from beginning to end.
We beg to say we have not changed anything from the Doctor's record save its arrangement. We would be pleased to publish the record as the Doctor wrote, but the fact that it would confuse the render to make such a change in our work where each family name is grouped, is. our reason and object of the change indicated.
