Samuel, native of and at Philadelphia, aged 73 years ; was descended from Colonists from Sweden, who settled here before William Penn ; was an ardent patriot in the Revolution. In June, 1775, he assisted in taking prisoner, Major Skeene (the elder), and other officers who were coming out in the British service. They were cap- tured on shipboard a few miles below the city by a detachment of picked men under Capt. Bradford. Mr. Wheeler was the first man to reach the deck, thereby it is be- lieved committed the first act of war south of New York in the war of the Revolution. Had been member of the Assembly; was the oldest justice in the county, and oldest member of the Philosophical Society,
