DEATHS (CONTINUED)

THE PROVIDENCE GAZETTE.
The Providence Gazette was the first newspaper printed in Providence. The first number was issued October 20, 1762, the last October 8, 1825.
Its full title when first published was THE PROVIDENCE GA- ZETTE AND COUNTRY JOURNAL containing the freshest advices, both Foreign and Domestic. January 5, 1782, this last caption was dropped. January 10, 1795, and Country Journal followed, but was restored Jan. 12, 1811. March 1, 1817, it was dropped again and there was substituted and Moral, Political and Commercial Advertiser. When it became a semi-weekly in January, 1820, it was known as THE PROVIDENCE GAZETTE only until it was merged with the American Oct. 11, 1825, and then known as THE RHODE ISLAND AMERICAN AND PROVIDENCE GAZETTE. This paper lasted until 1832.
It was a weekly until 1820, and thereafter until October 8, 1825, a semi-weekly. While a weekly its publication day was Sat- urday, except from October 4, 1780, to January 24, 1781, when it was Wednesday. From Saturday, May II, 1765, until August 9, 1766, its publication was suspended. While a semi-weekly the pub- lication days, in 1820, were Monday and Thursday; from 1821 to October 8, 1825, Wednesday and Saturday.
Of these numbers we have been so fortunate as to have seen all but Nos. 139, 149, and 502.
At the October meeting of the Rhode Island Historical Society in 1897 Hon. Amos Perry read a paper on this subject, which was printed in the Quarterly.
In this paper he says that the first editor and proprietor was William Goddard; that from August 9, 1766, Sarah Goddard & Co. were the publishers; from Sept. 19, 1767, Sarah Goddard and John Carter. After November 12, 1768, John Carter was sole proprie- tor until November 9, 1797, when William Wilkinson was a partner with Carter and so continued until May II, 1799, when Carter was

again sole proprietor. February 19, 1814, Hugh H. Brown and William H. Wilson were proprietors. After June 22, 1816, Brown was sole proprietor, until January 3, 1820, when he took Walter R. Danforth as a partner. When the paper was merged with the American in October, 1825, Brown was again sole proprietor and A. G. Greene, editor.
When Mr. Brown made this change in his business he sold only the newspaper portion and still continued in the business as a job printer.
When the paper was first printed it was advertised as "Printed opposite the Court House." While it lived it had four different lo- cations on the east side but was removed from one of these places to another several times in its career.
In this newspaper is a large amount of rich historical matter. It is the only newspaper in the State of whose issues during the War of the Revolution we have today a complete file. Its position was strongly in favor of the cause of the Colony. The subject mat- ter in its columns was well handled and its literary style was of a high order.
Hon. Zachariah Allen had the largest and best collection of the files of this paper in the State. He presented this to the Rhode Island Historical Society who have added considerable to it. They now lack approximately 75 numbers. The Providence Journal has the next best collection. The John Carter Brown Library and S. S. Rider have collections of the earlier numbers. The American Antiquarian Society of Worcester, Mass., have a few only. From these latter files we have been able to gain access to all but three numbers as above stated. Our thanks are hereby extended to the custodians of these files for the favor of perusal.
In 1892 Mr. Albert Holbrook made a selection from the Deaths and Marriages herein recorded of such family names and events as he was personally interested in. These he copied into a book which is now in the possession of the Rhode Island Historical Society.
In our collection following we have taken every death and mar- riage recorded where the names were given. To do this, it is need- less to remark, has cost us a large amount of time and patience.
The deaths from A to J were published in our preceding volume XIII of the Vital Records.
The present installment therefore commences with the letter K.
