JUDGE ROBT. M. LIVELY, Canton, Taxss.
The Livelys are from Kentucky. Judgs Lively's father was Rsv. L. P. Lively .. a Methodist minister, who preached a great deal in Kentucky, and who cams to Tszas in 1864. He has lived an aotivs and use- ful life since then and is yet living. Our subject was born January 6, 1854, near Fort Smith, Ark. He moved,, howsysr. with his father to Texas in 1864. They settled In Kaufman county, but cams from Kaufman county to Vanzandt in 1877. Hs was therefore only ten years of age when he came to Texas, and most of his education was necessarily acquired in this State. He chose the law as a pro- fession and began Its practics in 1876. November 27,, 1878, bs married Miss Juila Cannon. They have two boys and two girls, and altogether constitute a happy family. Judgs Lively served his county as county attorney In 1880-82, and is well known and honored in his profession. He practices in all the courts and takes cases in all the lines and Is understood to be Unusually thorough and painstaking. es- pecially in civil business. He is a mem- ber of the Methodist church and W. O. W. He owns about 1000 acres of land, and when asked if Vanzandt county Is des- tined to great development,, promptly an- swers, most assuredly, and with a great many of her best citizens, thinks that even the most enthusiastic of her peopis have no real conception of what will come. With united effort on the part of such men as Judge Lively the wilderness can be made to blossom as the ross, and Vanzandt county can be made a garden of wealth and beauty beyond the wildsst dream of the present. Ths resources are all that may be found in East Texas any- where and are yst largely undeveloped, so that land and other values are chsap.
CORNELIUS MAYFIELD, Ths Mayfields are Alabamians, Tala- dega county, ASBERRY Grand Sallne, Texas. They settled there in a very early day. The grandfather of our subject. Ephriam, with two brothers, Austin and Wylle, came to. Van Zandt county with their families In 1852. They were farmers and settled near Martin's Miil. They have been tillers of the soll all these years and have done their part In making the county one of the very best to be found anywhere. The eldest son of Ephriam was named Samuel Alex- ander And was born in 1860 in ths Ala- bama home, being therefore only two years old when the family cams to Taxas. Like his forefathers, he chose ths voca- tion of farming and has succeeded to the extent that he now owns and oper- ates one of the best equipped; farms In the count ;. At proper age he wooed and won Miss Sarah Dean, who still survives. They have aeven children, five of whom are living. Neely, as he is fa- miliarly known, Is the second, and was born In the country home near the pres- ent village of Phalba, December 24, 1875. Educated in the country schools at Jack- son and later completed in the Myrtle Springs academy. At the age of 16 he began to aspire to the profession of teaching, and at the age of 19 he enter- ed this, hla chosen vocation, and has taught consecutively in the county for nine years. 'Mr. Mayfield well represents his family of pioneers in the county and
builders of what makes a country good to live in. . Hs assisted in the assessing of taxes for the county in 1903. He Is a member of the Red Men. W. O. W. and the Masons, is young, well constituted, affable, courteous and ambitious. We have had the pleasure of meeting him on several occaelons in the county and re- gard him well adapted to official posi- tions requiring him to mix with the pub- ilc.
