Mr. Henry wis assiduous in his duties and his good wife made the cloth for their apparel aud a start in life soon resulted. Iiter he engaged in the saw mill and gin business and yet, later he merchandised in contec.ion and for 8 years was postmaster in the town of Zion, Miss. Some relatives an I friends preceded Mr. Henry to Elgewood and after several viiltsto Texas, he decided that this was the placefor him. Among the wide-awake, earnest and ectivs farmers we found In Van Zandt county we may easily name Mr. Gideon Douglas. He livee near Martins Mill, 14 running his plantation on a good ecale, and wielde quite an influence over the farm hands of the community. He le a grandeon of Mathew Douglas, wbo lived in the State of Missouri, and who aleo was a farmer. Preeton Douglas was a son of Mathew, and wae reared on hie father's farm in Missouri, However, he came to


Texas before the war. and In due time he married Miss Adeline Dorcas Brown, who was born and reared In the State of Mie- elesippi, but came to Texee early in life. Mr. and Mrs. Douglae wore married in 1868, and became the parente of five children. Mr. Douglas died about the close of the Civil War, but Mrs. Douglas is still living. Gideon, the eubject of thie sketeb, wae born August 19, 1867, in Van Zandt county. He wee reared on Van Zandt soll, went to her schoole, has been identified with ber intereste, and le today a typical Van Zandter-and Is proud of it.

December 26, 1889, he married Miee Hattie Coaker, of Henderson county. They have ten chil- dren, and live happily in the general eec- tion of their birth and tearing. . Mr. Douglae le a wide awake citizen and ac- tive farmer, and takes a great interest in what will advance his county and section. He has 1000 acres of land, 400 of which is tenanted by colored people, In whom Mr. He Douglas expresses much intereet. gives them all poseible advantage, and in trying to elevete them In the better aspir- atione of life.
