Roddy, Texas.
Mr. Stanhiser is an excellent examples of pinek and energy. He is a son of Lawrence Stanhiser . and was born in Smith county, January 1, 1667. His pa- rents died when he was a child. He was therefore left an orphan and was reared by etrangers. At hie majority be found himself homeless, moneyless and without an education. Hie first sffort then was to educate himself. Thie, in hie mind. was a necessary preparation for a pros- perous business career. . Hs first intend- ed to teach, but later preferred mercan- tils life. He says there is no excuse for a young man to remain witbout an edu- -cation In this country. Also, there le no excuse for idisness. There are Jobs bere for all who desire them and will do them justice. At the age of 24 Mr. 8. began as a clerk, and saved his money from the first. Five years ago he found him- self with money. enough to. embark in business on hla. own account, and he. choss Roddy as tbs place and opened a general store. He has advanced at every step sincs then and now carries regu- larly about a $12,000.00 stock. Hie large store house is full from front to rear of such goode as . his trads demands. Dry goods, groceries. boots, shoes, hats, caps, crockery, tinware. hardware. cutlery, harness, implementa, sto., in fact, every -. thing.the farmer wants. He is now ab-' solutsly and altogether a merchant, prides in hie business and is here to serve his customers. He attends to his own business in person. and saye be labora for the interest of his oustomera all the time and with them he is able to mecet all competition in prices, ac- commodatione and conveniences.
Roddy has a general store, a drug . store, two doctors' offees, a gin, stc. It was established eighteen years ago. is in an excellent section and is sur- It rounded by a prosperous citizenship.

Tom Murry is doing as much for Van Zandt county as any man in it.
Dr. Collins made 200 gallons of pure wine from his vineyard in 1902, which he uses freely in his practice to great advantage.
Mr. Elijah Sullivan would sell a part of his farm, that part known as the A. P. Sullivan home, 220 acres. This is thought to be as good a farm as can be found. Among ths useful and progressive men in the county is Dr. Moughon of Wills Point. He is a long time friend of this editor and rendered us valuable assist- ance in making this number and gave us encouragement which we most truly appreciate. The doctor is a first-class physician and is held in the highest pos- sibie estesm by the people of his town and county. No man ranks higher.
J. H. York of Edgewood is one of the very best men to be found in the county. quiet and unobstrusive, but thoughtful and progressive. He is a noble man, with the highest ambitions. Our ac- quaintance with him was most pleasant and any town may congratulate Itself in having such citizena.

Dr. McEachern of Martin's Mills is one of the useful and progressive citizens in the county; few men gave better port and treated us more kindly than he. He has been in the county a long time. His wife is a daughter of one of the oldest citizens of the state. Altogether we were placed under lasting obligations to them. He is a practicing physician with a wide practice and WAR chiefly Instru- mental in establishing what is known as the McEachern Telephone System.
The First Tanyard in Van Zandt Coun. ty was established in 1848 near Grand Salins hy Leiand H. Baughenan. The tanyard le gons and the spring is gone and no sign ean he found of it anywhere-

David T. Bundy whose father Jas. Bundy, was county commissioner at the time when the town of Canton was located and who, while meting as county com- missioner, contracted to huild the first court house in Canton, the ssid David T. got out most of the timhers for the buil- ding now lives in Lindale in Smith Co.
John Norman huilt the first jall in Can- ton, M. M. Norman, stone point, Aanan Knudeon contracted under Norman to get out the timhers and huild the first jall in Van Zandt county. Hs is living in the the now near Wise P. O.
Ambrose Fitzgerald was first .county clerk of the county and died a few years sines near Emery where members of his family now live.
Peter S. Benton was first sheriff of the county and died in Johnson county and has a son, William S. who now lives at or near Alvarado,

After the war ended he was shorlt in Connecticut. He had two children, Elisha and William, the last Lived to be 96 years old. His grand- father was born during the war of the Revolution in North Parish of New London, Connecticut. He married an Ingersoll and moved to western New York December 2, 1805 in Pennsyl- Tata. His grandfather volunteer- for five years in the United States army, but after serving three years and aine months in the war of 1812,' www. honorably discharged, but never applied for nor received & pension. His masternai grandfather was a wheel- Tight a ship carpenter; was a volun- "tear to the war of 1812. His grand- father-Manning roared seven children, only one of whom, Martin M. Manning, of Assarin, Kansas, is now living; he {0 years old . October 29, 1903.
His father was born in Pennsylvania. near New York. He was.a cooper and' camede Texas April, 1857. He mar- ried. Miss. Martha Harvey, who was born and reared in Montpeller, Ver -. mont. They married January 20th, 1828, and became the parents of deren . children." He died May 20, 1874; the, March 16, 1882, near Can- tom, Texas.
Wentworth . himself was born in Pendleton county, Kentucky, March 25, 1847. He came with his father to Van Zandt connty in 1858, and was mostly reared and educated within her borders. The family came from Ken- tucky to Red River county, Texas, in 1857; theace to Van Zandt county in 1858. . Mr. Manming's school life was Umited, "but "he has been a close ob- server and has seen mnoh of life, has a good knowledge of things and prob- rably knows more about his own sec- tion than any man in the country.
He has never married, is a hanker, and is-in real estate and insurance. In many respects he is a very useful citi- zen. He placed this editor under many and lasting obligations to him in the labor of this issne. He is gentie, courteous and obliging.
He owns a thousand acres of land and thinks a great future awaits Van Zandt county and all east Tezas.
