HON. W. J. GREER, Wills Point, Texas.

is one of the sturdy, honored and useful citizens of the county. He is a lawyer, but is one of those profession- al men who has cared for a Christian record and has always maintained himself weil on the moral and religi- ous side of life as well as the profes- sional and business side. He has an elegant 'home and excellent family in Wills Point, and an enviable reputa. tion as a gentleman and a lawyer. He is now the district attorney for his district, and has not lost any of his previously earned reputation as a prosecutor. High minded, fair and honest, but true and faithful. The editor has for many years enjoyed his personal friendship and feel quite sure that the country would be better off hi incre were more like him.

Let it be remembered that we have minde no charge for any space, or en- graving. or notice-found in this issue .... The entire journal is composed of what is true as found and adjudged by the editor. There Is not a paid sent- ence In it.

Our delay was caused by sickness. There was no way to prevent it. and we sincerely ask the good people to accept it. We did all in our power.

TO MY CUSTOMERS.

As i am here. at Roddy, in the drug business, and aim to stay with the good people of this community, I shall . at all times be pleased to see you at my store. and will take great pleasure in showing you iny stock of goods and giving, you my prices. Of course this will not place you under any obliga- tions to purchase, however. I am confident that my complete stock and fair prices will appeal to you and that I shall he favored with at least a fair share of your patronage. In any event. I promise you careful attention and courteous treatment. My . inten- tions are, and have always heen, to make friends and to retain the same by fair, square dealings. I can and do meet any of my competitors on prices and I guarantee to have a nice, clean, fresh . and up to date stock of drugs, as I'm master of my position and have always made it a point to handle such goods as are staple and such as my customers use. And let me very forci- biy impress the fact upon your minds that I am, as aforesaid, master of my position and make my prescription de- partment a specialty. I would be glad If all of you, who are not, would get in the habit of sending to me for such things as you need In my line, and If pure goods, low prices, constant at- tention and civility will do so, I will make you my customer and friend hy untiring efforts to make my stock su- perlor in every particular. . I appeal to your judgment and interest, he- cause of an earnest determination to treat all fairly and honestly, I ask for your consideration. And on these principles I base my claim and solicit a share of your patronage. Very re- spectfuily, J. F. FOSTER.

ELDER C. C. CARR, Myrtie Springs, Texas.

is one of those quiet, unassuming men with bright native talent, who is forging & worthy place In public es- teem. He is manfully and success- fully fighting over the battle that has been fought and won by so many heroic young men and, alas, lost hy others. Under ail the difficulties. Brother Carr has made progress all the time. He is a teacher and preach- er. Has heen teaching for many years and while teaching vocal music and literature, the Lord fald His hand on him and claimed him for the minls- try. He is a thoughtful, logical, clear, as a preacher, considerate, sympa- thetic, wise as a pastor. We predict for him a hright future and great use- fulness. The churches would do well to loose his hands and allow him to give himself wholly to the ministry.

J. V. HARRIS, Ben Wheeler, Texas.

The Harris family came from Lou- isiana. The father's name was Willi- am and he came to Texas in 1866. His mother was a Bradshaw and they were married in 1856. Mr. Harris himself was horn February 2, 1862, in Columhla county, Arkansas, and was educated In the common schools of Texas.

He chose to he a mechanic and has worked in wood and iron for twenty years. In May, 1883, he married Mlss Millie Cooper. He came from Rusk county four years ago.

He owns a turning lay and does a general line of work In wood and iron, hut especially he makes an excellent quality of chair. He Is a substantial citizen and is willing to lahor for the uphilding of his town and county.

BEN WHEELER.

Ben Wheeler is one of the old, aet- tled and permanent towns of Van Zandt county. The postoffice was es- tablished In 1874. Business hegan in 1883. It was burned June 16, 1893. It is located about twenty-two miles south of Grand Saline in the noted cream level country. It has a popula- tion of several hundred, with good school, churches, all the general lines . of mercantile husiness. It is about equi distant from Edom and Martin's Mills and about twenty mlies from Athens. Its citizens are of high order and many of the men of influence and rank in the county live here. The peo- ple think well of the country and would hardly exchange it for any other. See sketches and engravings.

Sim Florence is one of the striking characters and useful men in Grand Saline. He is a man of atrong convic- tlons and sticks to them. He is in real estate and insurance and is a notary public.

The Magbee mill, the first built In the county, was erected in 1846. It was an old fashioned tread mill hut did the grinding for a wide territory.

EDOM.

Edom Is situated in the southeast- ern portion of the county. It was es- tablished in about 1856, and has had a history of varied prosperity. It ls not on any railroad, but is surrounded by a good country and the age of the community produces a fixity about it that may well be enjoyed. Newness and change, lack of security, mar many of our Texas towns as places to five. Many of the officials and husy and useful men in other sections were reared in the Edom community. The people have the usual advantages and are moving along to the desirable goal of development and greater prosperity.

When Mr. John T. Curry came to the county twenty-five years ago, he operated a gin and ginned elghty bales a season. In this territory are now five steam gins and an average of about 500 bales each. This shows the development.

In the garden of Mrs. T. J. Cumbie I found excellent specimens of aspara- gus, cauliflower and celery. Verily, Van Zandt can grow anything. Mrs. C. aiso has a flourishing banana plant.

Wm. Magbee and Adam Sullivan came to the county in 1844 and set. tied in three and a half miles and five miles northwest of Wills Point.

Free State Enterprise, publisbed at Canton, Texas, by R. M. Gilmore. It is democratic and has a good circula- tion. It Is quite a factor in building up Van Zandt county. It has a good future and we bope for it great suc- cess. ..

Van Zandt county is rich in Iron ore.

There are very few things found in Texas at all that may not be found in Van Zandt county.

FRUIT VALE TEXAS.

Is a new town showing up on the T & P Ry between edgewood and Grand Saline It is In a belt of sandy loam that is well adapted to frnit, hence ite name.

During the lasttwelve months it har built rapidly and now has all the lines of business nanslly found In the small towns. The land contiguous in yet cheap and yet growing higher all the time.

The Grand Saline Sun, published by our greatly esteemed friend, Mr. Spears. He is aiso assisted in many ways by the gifted and genteel Mr. Jud Riley. Mr. Spears has done a most excellent work in building his present plant. He is as noble a spirit as may be found and his paper de. serves a place In every home. We are personally under many obligations for kindnesses, and we hope his robns: shadow will not grow less.

The Wills Polnt Chronlele, publish ed by Clarence Gilmore, is one of the best equipped and most widely cir- culated country newspapers in the country anywhere. Mr. Gilmore takes the position squarely that a good Iiv- ing and money besides is in a good newspaper plant and he has well demonstrated his position. It is an excellent newspaper.

The Texas Fruit Grower, published by W. A. T. Murry, Is a specialist in its line. It Is devoted mainly to the material uplift of the county, by dl- versification and fruit growing, but its editor has convictions on all moral and public questions and possesses. the courage to publish and advocate them.
