This school teaches the literary branches to and including the tenth grade; it also teaches tailoring, shoemaking, mattress, basketry, dairying, foot-mat, broommaking, domestic science, domestic art and agriculture, hog and poultry raising. In addition to the seven buildings, there are barns for all the domestic animals, and one hundred acres of good farm land.

St. John Industrial Institute and Orphanage Located One Mile North of Austin.
Orphans under twelve years of age, sound In mind and body, and unable to pay are admitted free of charge.
Orphans and other persons over twelve years of age may be admitted upon application.
The Institution has three hundred acres of land
in connection with its industries, where the students are given an opportunity in learning agriculture, horticulture, stock and poultry raising, dairying, etc. Other industries taught in the Institute: domestic science and art, hair- dressing, manicuring, massaging, plain and fancy sewing, tailoring, millinery, blacksmithing, wheelwright, instru- mental and vocal music, also shorthand, bookkeeping and typewriting. Literary branches from the first grade up to and including the high school are also taught. The school runs twelve months in the year.
Summer Encampments
are held annually on the campus of the Institution, where people of all trades, professions and religious denomina- tions are gathered, and specialists employed to lecture and teach. Special courses are given here during the sum- mer for farmers who have not the time to leave their crops to attend school.
A Chair of Sunday School Pedagogy
has been installed preparing young persons for usefulness in their respective communities. For the present, nine teachers are employed for twelve months in the year to look after the literary and industrial phases. For the sum- mer school, about two hundred lecturers and specialists of both races are employed for fifteen days. This Institu- tion is under the auspices of the St. John Encampment with a Governing Board of twelve members; an Advisory Board of five prominent white business citizens of Austin and vicinity. The Institution is indorsed by Bishop King Solvin, of the Episcopal Church; Father John O'Keefee, of the Catholic Church; the Austin Ministerial As- sociation (White) ; the Governor and State House officials of Texas.
The School is Located
at such a distance from town as to take away the excitement of city life, giving the student an opportunity of applying himself diligently to study and research.
A Negro-town-site is being laid off and the Waco-Tem- ple Interurban has been surveyed through the property. The Lampases branch of the Houston and Texas Central runs within two hundred yards of the building, giving per- sons an opportunity of getting on or off. The street cars of Austin come within one mile of the premises. Splendid public roads on every side of the farm, making access to the Institution without difficulty.
