Dallas is located in North Central Texas on the Trinity River, in what is known as the black waxey belt of

Texas.

Historical

The first settlement was made in Dal- las by John Neely Bryan in 1841, while CO.Texas was an independent republic. The and it and the village were named after George M Dallas, Vice-President of the United States. It was not until railroad development began to take place in an active way, that either Texas or Dallas made their greatest progress. The pop- ulation In Dallas in 1870 was only 5000. Two years later the rails of two steam roads reached the little village, trans- forming it almost over night, into a hustling, bustling city, doubling in pop- ulation by 1880, and trebling again by 1890,
