Population 3.100. The county seat of Wharton county on the G., H. & S. A., G., C. & S. F. Rys., and on the Colorado river. 62 miles southwest of Houston. It is In the center of Caney valley, which is about 10 miles wide and 50 miles long. Here the soil is exceptionally fertile and well adapted to the growing of alfalfa, etc. This section is particularly well adapted to the swine industry. The altitude is 5 feet higher than the adjoining prairie. Land can be secured on reasonable terms. The city has a cotton oil mill, 2 gins, a syrup and sugar factory, feed mill, grist mills, mattress factory, laundry, ice plant, electric lights, water works, good hotels, a hospital, the usual mercantile estab- lishments, 2 hanks, a weekly newspaper, the Spectator; high school, Methodist, Baptist. Episcopal, Preshyterian, Chris- tian and German Lutheran churches.
