Population 15,000. The judicial seat of Wichita county. Is located on the main line of the Ft. W. & D. C. Ry., 114 miles northwest of Fort Worth and 158 south- west of Oklahoma City. The W. V. . R.y., the W. F. & N. W. Ry., the W. F. & S. Ry, the W. F. & O. Ry. and the M., K. & T. System supply the city with exception- al rallroad facilities. Freight rates from defined points in the east and north ap- ply her- on an equal footing as with Dallas and Forth Worth, hence Its job- bing and factory distribution value.
This city has what is believed to be the largest natural gas field in the United States. but 15 miles distant. This gas Is furnished manufacturers at from 4 to 8 cents per thousand cubic feet, based on the amount of consumption, and an even lower rate can be secured on large con- sumption and long contract. There are numerous wells in this field producing from 30 to 40 million cubic feet daily. with a rock pressure of from 500 to 700 pounds to the square inch. But 16 miles away and in the western portion of Wichita county, the Electra Oil Field is located, one of the largest in. the whole southwest. Fifty miles south with direct rallroad connection. is a vast deposit of coal, which Is being extensively mined and furnished for manufacturing pur- poses at an extremely low rate per ton.
