Since then from bring for years the central point of an important civil revolution, she has been remitted by the logic of events to the peaceful pursuit of commerce, manufac- tures and the arts. The destructive rav- ages of a nearly obliterative fire in 1865, which swept away thousands of ancient landmarks, has been followed by the creation of a city of mostly new build- ings and appliances, to meet the require- ments of a more advanced era both in business and civil life.
Of those who were the examplars of business industry, thrift, wealth, intel- ligence, and social distinction a quarter of a century ago in Richmond, but few comparatively remain, or if remaining still maintain the old time status. There are 18,062 names contained in the Directory this year, being an increase since our issue of 1874 of 1,457. The map for our Directory of this year was gotten up at great expense expressly for our book and will found to be the most complete ever published of the city.
