and there were quantities of fish in the brooks and ponds. When the state was first organized, one of the first acts passed was to pay a bounty on bears, wolves and panthers that were killed.

The first town meeting was held May 10, 1768 (as shown by the records) at the house of Abner Chamberlin, at this meeting it was voted to join with Lyme in hiring preaching for the ensuing summer. At a meeting of the town held Oct. 15, 1768 it was voted to give Joel Strong 60 acres of land and the farm where John Kinsman now lives, provided he build a mill by the 20th of Nov., 1769 on the brook commonly called Gun Brook. This was the first mill built in town and stood on the brook near the school house in North Thetford District. The inhabitants increased annually but not rapidly until after the Revolu- tionary War. In 1768 there were 12 families and about 75 inhabitants in the town. The town July 22, 1768 and again May 15, 1771 voted to hire preaching and appointed a committee to procure a preacher. But not until the spring of 1773 did they procure one, engaging Rev. Clement Sumner. The first church was organized with eleven mem- bers and Rev. Clement Sumner was installed their pastor. He lived in a log house between the R. R. and Lyme bridge and the town voted him the "Ministers Right" of land as provided in the charter of the town, which was part of land where East Thetford village now is. Soon after his settle- ment the trouble arose between Great Britain and the Colonies and the people were divided into two parties, "Whigs and Tories." Mr. Sumner being a Tory and advocating his Tory principals both in his preaching and publicly, soon lost his influence as a preacher with the people, who threatened to tar and feather him if he did not leave town. Hearing that the threat was to be carried into effect, he left town in the night, going to Swanzy, N. H., where his family soon joined him. Here he exchanged farms with Capt. Wm. Heaton who soon came to East Thetford and erected a house which for many years was used as a hotel, and in which the County Courts were first held, and for holding town meetings. The church and people remained in a divided state in the midst of the Revolutionary War for two years after Mr. Sumner left with no preaching, or until Sept., 1778 when Rev. Asa Burton was invited to preach for a few sabbaths and Nov. 18 received a unanimous call to be their pastor. He accepted Dec. 5, and was ordained their pastor Jan. 19, 1779. Here he lived and was pastor of

the church 57 years until the time of his death May 1, 1836. He was a great scholar and considered a prominent theologian in his day. He was very active in building up the town and had great influence in forming the habits and tastes of the early settlers. Dr. Burton was obliged to hold his meetings in houses in winter and in the summer in barns and grooves, until the people felt able to build a meeting house. In 1871 the first meeting house was built of logs and stood near where Chas. Jenkins now lives, on the road leading from Thetford Hill to North Tethford, at this time the town had increased to about 300 inhabitants old and young. In 1783 but two families lived west of the Ompompanoosue river. Soon after the Revolutionary War emigrants came in rapidly and commenced the settlement of the west part of the town. All the meetings had been held in the little log church, and it soon became too small to accommodate the inhabitants, and the question arose about building a larger one. The town was united about building one, but the location was the great stumbling block. The inhabitants on the river wanted it built near the old one, but the west part contended it should be built near the center. A number of meetings were held by the town and the timber for the house was moved several times as the town changed the location. It became evident that the parties could not agree as to location and it was decided it should be left to a disinterested committee from out of town. This committee after long hearings from both sides, placed the location on the south end of the com- mon on Nutford hill midway between the places wanted by each party. This house was erected in 1787 and 1788 and stood on the south end of the common. It was built by the town and remained town property until 1830 when the town voted to sell the house at auction, giving one half of the proceeds to the society and (I am told the other half went towards building the town house). In 1787 when it was erected no way of heating it in winter was made and no bell or belfry, but in the summer of 1830 the society moved it and made some repairs adding a bell and stoves, and again in 1858 making quite extensive repairs. By a statute of Henry the third, 1250, pillory and stocks became a part of the English law and was established in all the colonies and con- tinued so even after their independence. When the meet- ing house was built the authorities put the stocks and whipp- ing post on the common near the north west corner of the building, which remained there and was used as late as 1805 for the punishment of criminals. In June of that

year it was used for the last time when an old man was publicly whipped by the town constable for stealing a cod fish. It is hard to believe that such an instrument was ever used in this town. It is easy to look back and wonder at some of the acts of our ancestors and so it will undoubtedly be to those who come after us.
