Superintendent's Report .
To the School Directors and Citizens of Thetford :
I present herewith my sixth annual report as super- intendent of the schools of Thetford, it being the eighth in the series of Union Supervision.
Ten schools have been maintained for a period of thirty weeks as required by law. On December 21, 1914, the school at Potato Hill was re-opened and sixteen weeks of school has been taught in this school. The school is to be continued in the fall of 1915.
The registration of pupils in the different schools at the close of the spring term was as follows: North Thet- ford 17, East Thetford 19, Stevens 21, Hill 13, Center 34, Post Mills 20, Potato Hill 9, Sawnee Bean 14, Union Village 15, Rice's Mills 13, Judd 9; total 184.
The registration of pupils in the different schools varies but little from that of one year ago except in the Stevens school where the number of pupils has almost doubled. The number of pupils now in attendance there is far too many for the size of the room.
The standing by grades at the end of the year, pre- vious to promotion, was :

ANNUAL REPORT
The total number of days' attendance of all pupils was 22,54512. The actual attendance was 94.5+ percent of the possible attendance. Nineteen cases of truancy have been reported throughout the year.
Quite extensive repairs were made at Sawnee Bean during the summer vacation and the building is now a pleasant and comfortable one, conforming, I think, to State requirements. Satisfactory improvements were also made at Union Village. If the present number of pupils continues at the Stevens it is imperative that the school- room should be enlarged. A new floor and blackboards should be gotten anyway. New floors are needed at North Thetford and Rice's Mills and other minor improvements should be made at Rice's Mills. Otherwise I think the schools are in a reasonably satisfactory condition.
Under an act passed by the General Assembly of 1915 thirty-four weeks of school must be maintained dur- ing the school year beginning July 1, 1915. This means that Thetford must have four more weeks of school than has recently been held. Agreeably to this act I would sug- gest that the terms be arranged as follows: a fall term of twelve weeks beginning Monday, August 30, 1915; a win- ter term of thirteen weeks beginning Monday, November 29, 1915 with a vacation of one week at Christmas; and a spring term of nine weeks beginning Monday, April 10, 1916.
During the year free tuition certificates were issued to the following pupils: Emma E. Coombs, Thetford Hill; Dorothy M. Allen and Karl D. Bailey, Post Mills ; Louise M. Cadwell and Ida H. Wise, East Thetford ; Ruth E. Holway and Jessie Vaughan, Thetford Center.
There is a tendency on the part of pupils to enter high school prematurely. As in previous reports I have made I would again impress upon the minds of parents the advisability of keeping their children in the grades until they have obtained a good foundation in the funda- mental elementary school subjects.

TOWN OF THETFORD
In my opinion we have just completed the most satis- factory school year since I have been connected with the schools of Thetford. I attribute this largely to the fact that so few changes have had to be made in the teaching force. Only one change has been made throughout the year.
Under the new school law the position of local super- intendent becames appointive by the State Board of Edu- cation instead of elective by the local school boards. I wish to express my appreciation to the local board of Thetford for the hearty support they have given me dur- ing the six years I have served in their employment and to extend to the teachers and citizens of Thetford my thanks for their loyalty and support in promoting the policies of our school system.
Respectfully submitted, CHARLES P. MCKNIGHT

Report of Health Officer
February 2, 1916.
There has been very little contageous disease in town dur- ing the past year.
A mild epidemic of chicken pox in January, two cases of scarlet fever in June and one case of smallpox in July, and one case of typhoid fever, all of which, so far as we could learn, originated out of town.
A large number of grippe cases are now previlent and can be much reduced by proper care to guard against contagion and by proper ventilation.
L. B. ALLEN, Health Officer.
