7. Guards will be placed at doors and strict train discipline maintained during journey .

8. The Camp Quartermaster will furnish travel rations for this journey. No allowance for cooked meals can be made. An allowance of 21c per day, for the purchase of liquid coffee is authorized.

9. The U. S. P. & D. Officer will furnish Federal Transportation for this movement, and will make payment for services rendered under this order.

10. The travel, pay and subsistence enjoined is necessary in the public service.

By order of THE GOVERNOR. JOIIN H. CHARNOCK, Adjutant General.

STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA, ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE, Charleston, August, 25, 1922.

General Order

No. 37

1. The following schedule for the training of the West Virginia National Guard for the Armory Drill period ending December 31, 1922, is published for the guidance of all concerned. This scheme of instruc- tion has been very carefully compiled and will result in marked im- provement in the Company Instruction.

2. The limited time which can be devoted to drills demands that, in order for the maximum benefit to be derived from the time spent, all officers will carefully and thoroughly prepare for the work outlined, and then conscientiously follow the schedule. Any deviation from the pro- gram as set down will invariably upset the balance of training, and lessen the value of the drills.

3. For all drills and exercises prescribed there are instruction and reference books and pamphlets in the companies. These will be con- sulted and carefully followed.

4. In all cases in the schedule where the word 'company' is used, the word 'platoon' may be substituted if the number of men present for drill does not permit the formation of two or more platoons.

5. The inspection prescribed at the conclusion of each drill should be so arranged, utilizing the services of the junior officers of the company, as to enable the company commander to accurately determine the condition of the arms and equipment of the company.

6. Where it has not already been done, companies will be divided at once into permanent platoons, sections, etc., as provided in tables of organization; and these subdivisions should function as such throughout all drills.

103

REPORT OF ADJUTANT GENERAL

1922.]

7. Recruits should be given special instruction under the best available instructors, in the following subjects: School of the Soldier (without and with arms), Military Courtesy, Wearing of the Uniform, and the School of the Squad (where there are several under instruction at one time) : and the company commander must use his discretion as to the time when they should be permitted to join the company in its drills and progress with it.

The Company Commander may designate from the entire company a demonstra- tion squad of not to exceed S men to work on Machine Gun Drill during times when School of Soldier, of Squad, and of Company are prescribed. The purpose of this is to permit the selection of men who are fully qualified in these subjects, to receive additional Machine-gun Training with a view to qualifying them as better instructors for the remainder of the Company. Great care will therefore be used in their selection, and where possible the personnel of the squad will not be changed during the period up to December 31, 1922.

During periods marked (a) company will be divided between light mortar and 37 mm. gun, all men taking instruction in one or the other. Gun Groups and Liglit Mortar Groups will work at the same time. Inspection in stripping and assem- bling will include filling of recoil cylinder of 37 mm. gun.

The Company Commander may designate from the entire Company a demon- stration squad of not to execed cight men to work on 37 mm. and Light Mortar drill during times when School of Soldier, of Squad, and of Company are pre- scribed. The purpose of this is to permit the selection of men who are fully qualified in these subjects, to receive additional 37 mm. and Light Mortar Train- ing with a view to qualifying them as better instructors for the remainder of the company. Great care will therefore be used in their selection, and where possible the personnel of the squad will not be changed during the period up to December 31, 1922.
