Private services were held for Charles Earl Leskela of Bodfish. Interment was at For- est Lawn Memorial Park Sunnyside, in Long Beach, California. Charles was born June 19, 1918 in Kersarge, Michigan and died May 12, 1993 in Mt. Mesa. He was 74 years old.


Mr. Leskela worked for Bekins for 30 years before re- tiring. He was a resident of Bodfish for 2 years.


He is survived by his daughter Gloria George of Bodfish; son Michael Hoyt of Long Beach; son Stephen Hoyt of Hollywood; son David Hoyt of Spain; sisters Marie Kauppila, Helen Niemi, Irene Koopikka, Esther Ranberg, all of Michigan; 3 grandchildren and 1 great- grandchild.

OBITUARY


Newton Walter Derr


On Tuesday, April 27, ser- vices were held for Newton Walter Derr, who passed away April 22, 1993 at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.


A long time resident of the Kern River Valley, Mr. Derr and his wife, Barbara, moved to Bakersfield in 1988.


Mr. Derr was born August 12, 1922 in Kansas City, Mis- souri and resided in Kern County for 16 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He was a carpenter for 30 years. Newton was a member of the Kernville Masonic Temple. He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters and six brothers.


Survivors include his wife, Barbara Derr of Bakersfield; sons, Ronald Derr of Anaheim, Daniel Derr of Minnesota, David Derr of Kernville, and Joel Derr of Bakersfield; daughters, Linda Derr of Anaheim, and Jamie Derr of Bakersfield; eleven grandchildren; sister Ada Mae Grandy of Los Angeles and numerous nieces and neph- ews.


Bernice Cecelia Erickson


Private services were held for Bernice Cecelia Erickson of Lake Isabella. Bernice was born September 6, 1914 in New Winsor, Illinois, and died May 16, 1993 in Lake Isabella. She was 78 years old.


She is survived by her daughter Careylyn Elfstrom of Bodfish; daughter Linda Erickson of Chatsworth; son George Erickson of Denver, Colorado; son Ronald Erickson of Rockford, Illinois; sisters Jean Warneke and Kay Luggues of Illinois; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Private services were held for Georgia Mae Phillips of Lake Isabella. Georgia was born June 30, 1912 in Antlers, Oklahoma and died May 19, 1993 in Mt. Mesa. She was 80 years old.


She was a resident of Lake Isabella for the past seven years and a former resident of Tor- rance, California.


Phillips is survived by her sister Elsie Thomas of Lake Isabella; brother Louie Parker of South Lake; brother Kenneth Word of Lake Isabella; brother Cecil Word of Lakewood and brother Robert Word of Lake Isabella.

OBITUARY


Wesley Doyle Parrish


A funeral service was held Thursday, May 20, 1993, at 12:00 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Wesley Doyle Parrish of Lake Isabella. A visitation preceded his service on Wednesday. Officiating was Pastor David Snow of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella. And officiating at graveside were the officers of the Kern River Valley American Legion. Interment was at Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights.


Doyle was born January 24, 1923 in Olustee, Oklahoma and died May 16, 1993 in Mt. Mesa. He was 70 years old. Doyle served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII from 1942 to 1945. After WWII, Doyle attended U.S.C. graduating with a teacher's degree. He retired from the Los Angeles School District after 33 years of service. Doyle was a member of the K.R.V. American Legion, the Retired Principal Association, the Kern River Valley Eagle Scouts Honor Board and a board member of the K.R.V. F.F.A.


He is survived by his wife of 10 years Donna Parrish of Lake Isabella; son Thomas Parrish of San Francisco; son Wesley Parrish of Colorado; son Gre- gory Parrish of Garden Grove, California; son Ryan Parrish of Kentucky; daughter Rhonda Dell of California; brother Wayne Parrish of Santa Monica, Califomia; sister Phyllis Shield of Mar Vista, California; and three grandchildren.

James Ralph Anderson


A funeral service was held Friday, May 14, 1993 at 11:00 a.m. at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for James Ralph Anderson of Weldon. Officiating was Pastor Floyd Castillo of the Highland Chapel United Methodist Church in Lake Isabella. Inter- ment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights.


Mr. Anderson was born September 10, 1915 in Little Rock, Arkansas and died May 11, 1993 in Weldon, California. He was 77 years old.


Mr. Anderson served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945. He worked for Lockheed for 25 years before and moving to Weldon.


He is survived by his daughter Darlene Winham of Weldon, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Hurley T. Middleton


Hurley T. Middleton was bom January 19, 1914 and passed away May 17, 1993 in Baldwin Park at the age of 79. Hurley is to be cremated and no services are to be held.


Middleton is survived by daughter Shirley Allard and granddaughter Valerie.


Hurley had previously lived in the Kern River Valley for 25 years.


Lavell Hope Orient


Memorial services were held Friday at noon in the Kem Valley Bible Church in Lake Isabella for Wofford Heights resident Lavell Hope Orient. Officiating was Reverend Jack Dilley. Mrs. Orient passed away in a local convalescent hospital on Sun- day afternoon. She was born August 18, 1924 in St. Louis, Missouri and spent her early years there. She spent most of her adult life in the Los Angeles area and moved to Wofford Heights in 1990.


She is survived by her hus- band Joseph D. Orient of Wofford Heights; son Steve Rozick of Torrance; son James M. Rozick of Hawthorne; daughter Susan Stevens of Washington state; daughter Sandra Roberts of Florida; several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.


No visitation was held. Pri- vate inurnment was at Union Cemetery in Bakersfield fol- lowed by interment at sea.


The Bonnewell family and Taft Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.

Mary Josephine Wadsworth Wharton


Mary Josephine Wadsworth Wharton, 89, of Foley, Ala- bama, died February 4, 1993 at Lexington, Ohio. Mary Jo was the fifth child of seven born of Talliaferro Johnson and Louella Arant. She was born in Eclec- tic, Alabama.


A homemaker, she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Foley, Alabama.


Survivors include one sister, Lillian Mangold, Palmdale and Ontario, California. Nieces: Lorraine Smith, Phoenix, Ari- zona; Elaine Young, Palmdale, California; Mary


Hope Eytcheson, El Monte, Califor- nia; Inez Boyett and Mary Ruth Thompson, Prattville, Alabama. Nephews: Merton Mangold, Jr., Ontario, California; Frank Walter Brassell, Downey, Cali- fornia.


Preceding Mrs. Wharton in death is her husband William G. Wharton, Game Warden for the State of Alabama. Sisters: Viola Ethel, Maud, Leila Ruth, Clara Gertrude, and one brother, Benjamin Wadsworth.


Three great grand nieces: Cheryl Borthick, Francine Stirling, Janice Newman (de- ceased), and one great grand nephew Frank Walter Brassell, all of the Kern River Valley; Neale Brassell, Califomia; great grandniece Dixie Stansell, Coronado, California; and fif- teen other great, great grand- nieces and nephews of Ala- bama and California; and friend James Rice of Lexington, Ohio.


Visitation was held one hour before services held at the Mack Funeral Home in Robertsdale, Alabama. The Lexington Av- enue Funeral Home in Lexing- ton, Ohio, was in charge of local arrangements. Burial was at Pine Rest Cemetery of Foley, Alabama.

James Henry Shackelford, Jr.


Services are pending for James Henry Shackelford, Jr. of Lake Isabella. Mr. Shackelford was born January 28, 1925 in California and died May 27, 1993 in Mt. Mesa, CA. He was 68 years old.


Mr. Shackelford served in the U.S. military from 1941 to 1967. He later retired after 16 years as an aircraft mechanic for Continental Air Lines. He was a life member of the V.F.W., the Kern River Valley Moose Lodge #498.


He is survived by his wife of 5 years Marjorie Shackelford of Lake Isabella; brother Richard Shackelford of Fontana, Cali- fornia; brother Norman Shackelford of Arkansas; and sister Barbara Testa of San Bernardino, California.

George "Tex" Townson


George "Tex" Townson, 78, a former Ventura resident for 35 years, of Weldon, California, passed away on Tuesday evening in Bakersfield after a long illness.


Mr. Townson was born Au- gust 30, 1914, in Louisiana and had lived in Ventura for 35 years moving to Kern County in 1979. He was retired having been a driller for 25 years. During his career he was employed by Getty Oil, Laughlin Oil and had worked overseas in Iraq. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Townson was an avid fisherman, hunter and enjoyed gardening.


He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, Lillian Townson of Weldon; sons Kenneth Townson and Daniel Townson, both of Michigan; daughters Elaine Hewit and Barbara Autry, both of Florida; daughter Roberta Kirk of Camarillo; daughter Margaret Riggins of Napa; daughter Betty Fulmer of Gold Hill, Oregon; daughter Susan Sieminski of Springfield, Oregon; daughter and son-in-law Adella and Myron Baker of Ventura; brother Jesse James Townson of Louisiana; brother Clyde Townson of Texas; sister Imogene Townson of Missouri; 27 grandchildren and 26 great- grandchildren.


Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 7, 1993 at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura with officers of the Poinsettia Lodge No. 633 F. & A.M. officiating.

Wilma Averil Holloman


A funeral service was held Thursday, June 3, 1993 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella for Wilma Averil Holloman of Mt. Mesa. Offici- ating was Pastor David Snow. Mrs. Holloman was born Feb- ruary 21, 1920 in Marion, Kansas, and moved to the Kern River Valley in 1959. She died May 30, 1993 in Mt. Mesa. She was 73 years old and a 34 year resident of the Kern River Val- ley.


She is survived by her hus- band of 56 years James Holloman of Lake Isabella; son Lee Holloman of Simi Valley, California; son Jim Holloman of Lake Isabella; sister Billie McKahn of Oklahoma; four grandchildren and one great- grandchild.


Mrs. Holloman was a mem- ber of the Eastern Star with dual memberships in South Gate, California and the Kern River Valley, a member of the Kern River Valley Rebekah's Lodge, the Kern River Valley Hot Shots Band. She was a Lady of the Moose, and a member of the Side Walk CBer's.

Mrs. Schuler was born Sep- tember 6, 1929 in Dennison, lowa and died as the result of a tragic auto accident in Califor- nia City on June 5, 1993. She was 63 years old.


She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law David and Suzanna Schuler of Bakers- field; grandson Andrew Schuler of Bakersfield; and sister Vera Karauss of Oregon.

Frank John Tuchek


Graveside funeral services were held in the Kern River Valley District Cemetery on Wednesday, June 9 at 11:00 a.m. with Monsignor Anthony Herdegen, Pastor of St. Jude's Catholic Church officiating for Mr. Frank John Tuchek. Frank passed away at his residence in Bodfish on Monday morning, June 7. He was born in Min- nesota on April 12, 1949 and spent his early years there. He has resided in the Lake Isabella area for the past nine years. He was the manager of the B.A.R.C. Recycling Center in Lake Isabella.


Mr. Tuchek is survived by his wife Gloria George Tuchek of Bodfish; sons Justin and Josh Tuchek and Scott & Randy George of Long Beach; grandson Brandon George; brothers John and Greg Tuchek of Long Beach. He is also sur- vived by many nieces, nephews and friends. ยท

A memorial service was held Friday, June 11, 1993 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kern River Valley Elks Lodge in Wofford Heights for Lloyd Sylvester Tysland of Kernville. Officiating were the Officers of the Elks Lodge #2358. Interment was at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights.


Mr. Tysland was born April 25, 1917 in Canton, South Dakota and died June 5, 1993 in Mt. Mesa, California. He was 76 years old. He was a mem- ber of the Kern River Valley Elks Lodge #2358 and a 17 year resident of the Kern River Valley.


He is survived by his son Terry Sargent of Los Angeles; daughter Julie Velarde of Goleta, California; brother Earl Tysland of Naples, Florida; sister Valborg Akland of Sun City, Arizona; sister Lois Stewart of Sun City, Arizona; and grandson Aaron Velarde of Goleta, California.

In loving memory of Mary Frances Haymond. Born Oct. 21, 1912. Passed on June 12, 1993. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Robert S. Haymond in March of this year, and her brothers Hershel Wampler and brother Wm. Ray Wampler who was a resident of this valley for many years. She is survived by her beloved sister Minnie Shufeldt of Fort Towsen, Oklahoma, brother-in-law Gaylord Haymond and numer- ous nieces and nephews of Los Angeles.


A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 19 at the Church of Christ, Mt. Mesa at 11 a.m. Graveside following. The family requests donations to the American Cancer Soci- ety in lieu of flowers.

Ronald Ray Jones


Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 10, 1993, at 11:00 a.m. at the Christian Fellowship Center in Wofford Heights for Mr. Ron R. Jones. He passed away at his resi- dence in Wofford Heights on Sunday evening June 13. He was bom in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania on July 22, 1930 and spent his early years there. He came to California in 1961 settling in Gardena. Mr. Jones was in the construction indus- try and worked throughout the United States. He moved to Wofford Heights in 1988. He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Ray Jones Jr. in 1952. He is survived by his wife Kathleen of the family home in Wofford Heights. One son Donald Jones of Everett, Washington, three daughters Lois Ann Sprott of Bouton, lowa, Kathy Boaz of Redondo Beach, Debra Jones of Adle, lowa, three brothers Roy Jones of Lake Isabella, Richard Jones of River Bank, and Ralph Childs of Apple Valley, three sisters Patricia Powell of Stuart, Florida, Laura Lee Cole of Paxton, lowa, Linda Daniels of Douglasville, Georgia, and Sally Walker of Wilmington. He is also survived by twelve grand- children, three great grandchil- dren, many nieces, nephews and friends. Inurnment was held and interment was at Brookhaven Cemetery in Sagertown, Pennsylvania. Services were entrusted to the care of the Bonnewell Family, Taft Funeral Home.

Edgar Alden Berg Sr.


Graveside funeral services were held on Monday, June 21 at 1:00 p.m. in the Kern River Valley Cemetery for Mr. Edgar A. Berg Sr., 75. He passed away in a Bakersfield hospital on Wednesday evening, June 16. Mr. Berg was born in Waseca, Minnesota on July 4, 1917 and spent his early years in Mason City, lowa and Faribault, Minnesota. He and Vivian May Martin were married in Faribault on June 22, 1937 and together with their family they came to Barstow in 1946 and to the Los Angeles area in 1948. Mr. Berg was a structural ironworker and worked in con- struction throughout the southern California area. He moved to Bodfish in 1981. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He is survived by his wife, Vivian, of Bodfish. Three sons and their wives, James and Eva Berg of Garden Grove, Edgar A Berg Jr. and Lisa of Garden Grove, and William and Marcia Berg of Bodfish. One brother Donald Berg, and two sisters, Emily Abbott of Glendale and Evelyn Manz of Ballwin, Missouri. He is also survived by three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Services were en- trusted to the care of the Bonnewell Family, Taft Funeral Home.

Mary was born December 12, 1919 in Fairfax, lowa and died June 22, 1993 in Mt. Mesa, California. She was 73 years old. She is preceded in death by her husband Philip R. Henderson who died May 6, 1993. Mary was a member of the Eastem Star and the Golden Slippers and a 17 year resident of the Kern River Valley.


She is survived by her son Jim Henderson of Saratoga, California; daughter Lynette Richards of Lomita, California; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Of- ficiating was Pastor David Snow of the First Baptist Church. Carol was born March 27, 1934 in Highmore, South Dakota and died June 28, 1993 in Mt. Mesa, California. She was 59 years old.

Floyd belonged to the Masonic Lodge #827 and Scottish Rite and the Shrines.

He was a member of the Search and Rescue in Tujunga and the C.B. Club in Tujunga.


He is survived by his wife of Oildale; daughter Carol Oldham of Oildale; stepdaughter Karen Murray of Wofford Heights; stepdaughter Brenda Wade of Ontario, California; stepson Michael Daniels of North Caro- lina; brother Jim Sullivan of Sacramento; 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

OBITUARY


Carrie F. Howell


Carrie F. Howell died of causes related to age at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Idaho. She was 89.


She was born May 11, 1904, in Illinois to Herman and Caroline Schmidt Schultz. She attended schools in Illinois.


Whe she was a young child, the family lived in Saskatchewan and Alberta, Canada, where her father worked on various farms.


They moved to Spokane in 1917, and in 1942 she moved to Seattle, where she worked in the Boeing aircraft plant.


In February 1945 Mrs. Howell entered the Women's Army Corp. After her release in July 1945, she moved to San Di- ego, California.


She married Louis Howell in June 1949 in San Diego.


The couple moved to Oceanside, California in 1951 and later to Lake Isabella. Her husband died in 1971.


Some time later she moved to Idaho to be near her nieces, Donna Paulson and Joan Cochrane, both of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, and lived with her nephew, Don Adams of Mos- cow, for several years.


Mrs. Howell recently moved to the Valley Rehabilitation and Living Center in Lewiston.


She was a member of the American Legion and Women


of the Elks, and liked to play slot machines and card games. She also enjoyed playing the organ, painting, roller derbies and fol- lowing the San Diego Padres baseball team.


Four brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.


Cremation is scheduled and a private famil y service will be held at a later date.


Malcom's Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.


Robert Eugene Dunn


Private services were held for Robert Eugene Dunn of Wofford Heights.


Robert was born March 21, 1908 in Califomia and died June 29, 1993 in Mt. Mesa. He was 85 years old. He worked for Rockwell for 10 years before retiring and was a member of the Kern Valley Rovers (Good Sam), Tillie Creek Property Owners Association and a long time member of the Elks in Redondo Beach, Califomia.


He is survived by his wife of 53 years Alnette Dunn of Wof- ford Heights; son James Dunn of Bakersfield; daughter Judith King of Rancho Palos Verdes; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

OBITUARY -


Robert M. Williams


Memorial services were held at the Kern River Valley Elks Lodge #2358 in Wofford Heights on Saturday, June 10 at 10:00 a.m. for Mr. Robert Milton Williams. Officiating at the services will be the Kern River Valley Elks Lodge #2358 and Reverend Jack Dilley, Pastor of the Kern Valley Bible Church.
