Fighter pilot, civic leader has final respects paid
By BRET BRADIGAN Kern Valley Sun
No one grumbled when an airplane, mak- ing a low ap- proach to Kern Valley Airport, disrupted the sol- emn services at Tillie Creek Amphitheater.
After all, the crowd of 75 was in place to celebrate the life of Bob Myrann. They knew he, as a retired fighter- and test-pilot, would have welcomed the aerial interlude.
Bob Myrann, 71, died Wednesday, Oct. 6 after a linger- ing illness. He was born March 22, 1922 in Tolstoy, South Da- kota. In between, he kept busy.
As Tom Mckinney, official- ing the service, said from the bio- graphical background given by Myrann's family, his love of fly- ing began early, when a barn- storming pilot landed in a field near the family homestead. The plane sat idle, waiting for the pilot to return to finish repairs. The future pilot spent months in the cockpit, dreaming of airbound glory.
At the age of 20, he found himself flying out of San Fran- cisco, pilot of a B-17 bound for the South Pacific. He resigned his commission following the war,
Myrann was lauded as man who dreamed up community projects, then made them work
after 200 missions, but reentered the service as a fighter pilot for the early jet craft in the Korean War.
In 1954, Myrann was hired by Gen- eral Dynamics as a test pilot. During his 20-plus years, he flew some 76 types of aircraft, ending his career as a pilot of the Air Force's F-11I in Fort Worth, Texas.
Despite the bravura required of pilots, Mckinney said Myrann had a fear of the water. "He never went into the water with- out a lifejacket." In fact, while returning from a mission with a stalled engine, Myrann prepared to bail out. When he saw the water waiting for him below, he tried again, desperately, to restart the engine. It finally shuddered back to life.
"He never hit a parachute once, he always got the craft back home," Mckinney said.
After his retirement, Myrann opened the Sportsman's Center in Lake Isabella, which quickly became the repository of tall tales and fish stories. He then became manager of the Kern Valley Shell Station and sold real estate for Century 21. His widow, Daphne,
said it took one visit, on the ad- vice of friends, to decide the Kern Valley was the place for them. They've never looked back.
During his stay here, accord- ing to First District Supervisor Roy Ashburn, Myrann was a man who "always had a new idea, had a new project, a promotion. Ile succeeded at every single term."
Among his achievements was the presidency of the Lake Isabella Chamber of Commerce, as well as twice being head of the Visitors Council. He was chairman of the Kern County Parks and Recre- ation Commission. He initiated the Kern Valley Fish and Game Habitat Improvement Club, the Christmas Tree program and the Junior Pheasant Hunt. He was named the 1989 Lake Isabella Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year.
Myrann is survived by his wife, Daphne, son Robert and daughter Lonnie. Graveside services were held Monday in Lancaster.
His nephew, Fred Myrann, said at the service that Uncle Bob had given him his first ride in an air- plane, and in a jet. During the airplane flight, he said, "We chased antelope."

A Memorial Tribute to Sidney Richards Fuller, My Husband
A gentle, sensitive, caring and conscientious man, he made our years together a time of joy and tranquility. He gave the best that he was and had to those he loved, treated his fellow man with respect and met fully all responsibilities life imposed upon him. No man can do more. Without criticism, he tolerated my whims and foibles and en- couraged my endeavors. I was privileged to be his wife. I miss him in a hundred large and little ways but I thank the Lord for releasing him from his suffering and I applaud his courage. He sailed on many rough seas through World War II and the Vietnam and Korea conflicts on merchant supply ships which were heavy in the water and, as he called them, "sitting ducks."
May this last voyage be the most peaceful of them all Godspeed, my love.
I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to many caring people in this valley who helped us through these trying times: Dr. James Chang, his staff and nurses Maria and Denise who helped prolong the quality of life for Sid and gave us a little more time together; Dr. Gary Finstad who kindly sustained us and supported Sid's choices; Kern Valley Hospital and staff, Natalie, Cindy and all the other nurses and individuals who talked, listened and sympa- thized whose names I did not know or cannot recall but who gently cared for Sid during his many day-long sessions there.
I must include Elle, associ- ated with both Dr. Finstad and Kern Hospice, who gave unstintingly of her time and support. Thanks also to neigh- bors, friends and family who rallied around us and to Keith and Mike at Med-Mart for their courtesy and assistance. To any I may have omitted, I apologize. Please include yourselves in this listing. I am profoundly grateful to each and every one of you. God bless you all.
