The County Clerk may appoint two Deputies for the County Court, one of whom shall receive a salary of one hundred and seventy-five dollars per month, and the other a salary of one hundred and fifty dollars per month. The said County Clerk may also appoint two Deputies for the Probate Court, one of whom shall receive a salary of one hundred and seventy-five dollars per month, and the other a salary of one hundred and fifty dollars per month .- [ Amend- ment March 2, 1864.]
In addition to the deputies allowed by law, the County Clerk is authorized [Act February 20, 1868] to employ, from time to time, as many extra copyists as may be necessary to perform the duties of his office, who shall severally be paid a compensation not to exceed six cents a folio of one hundred words, for the matter recorded by them respectively : provided, the amount so paid shall not exceed three-fourths of the amount received by said Clerk for the copying and recording done by them during such month.
To the Sheriff, eight thousand dollars per annum.
To one Under Sheriff, two hundred dollars per month.

The Sheriff may appoint a Deputy to act as Bailiff for the Fifteenth District Court, at a salary of one hundred and fifty dollars per month, [ Act March 31, 1866] and may appoint, if deemed necessary by the Board of Supervisors, a Matron and Assistant Matron for the female department of the County Jail, at a salary not exceeding one hundred dollars per month .- [ Act April 4, 1864.]
In addition to the deputies now allowed by law, the Sheriff may appoint [Act March 20, 1868] one additional Deputy, and an Assistant Book-keeper to act as Deputy Sheriff; said Deputy shall receive a salary of one hundred and fifty dollars per month, and the Assistant Book-keeper one hundred dollars per month.
The Sheriff shall have power [Act March 20, 1868] to appoint and remove two of the Porters now appointed by the Board of Supervisors to take charge and perform duties about the Court and other rooms of the City Hall.
The Sheriff shall be allowed [Act March 20, 1868] the sum of twelve hundred dollars per annum to defray his expenses for counsel and attorneys' fee ..
To the Coroner, twenty five hundred dollars per annum ; [Act March 31, 1866] he shall also be allowed and paid, as fees, fifty dollars per month, for chemical analyses, and ten dollars for each interment made by him ; [Act March 12, 1864] and he shall likewise receive for the interment of deceased persons payment at the same rate each, as is allowed for the interment of deceased hospital patients in said city and county, not to exceed ten dollars for each interment made by him. The compensation allowed by this Act shall be paid out of the General Fund, and shall be audited and paid in the same manner as the salaries of officers for the said city and county : provided, that the said Coroner shall make oath that he has received no compensation for any of the items charged in his demand ; and that the interments charged in his demand, if any have been made by him, and that the bodies interred were proper subjects for burial by the Coroner .- [ Act March 12, 1864. ]
To the Mayor, three thousand dollars per annum.
To the Clerk of the Mayor, one hundred and fifty dollars per month .- [ Amendment April 4, 1864.]

To the City and County Surveyor, five hundred dollars per annum, which shall be in lieu of all fees or other charges for official services, which would otherwise be a city and county charge. and he shall charge and collect, for services rendered individuals, such fees as may be prescribed and allowed by the Board of Supervisors.

four thousand dollars per annum, which salary shall be in full for all services required of him and for all contingent expenses of his office, except necessary books ; and he shall devote his whole time, during office hours, to the business of his office, and shall keep his office open to the public during the same hours provided by law for the City and County Auditor. To assist him in making his assessments, he shall be allowed the following deputies, for the office : one Chief Deputy, five office Deputies, and one Draughtsman ; for the Field, one Chief Deputy and fourteen Under Deputies. Four of the office Deputies shall be paid at the rate of one hundred and fifty dollars per month, each, and shall be employed and paid only from the first day of February until the assessment roll is finally completed and handed over to the Auditor, and only for such time as they shall be actually employed in the discharge of their duties. The fourteen Under- field Deputies shall be paid at the rate of one hundred and fifty dollars per month, each. The term for which such Field Deputies shall be paid, shall not exceed an average of three months each. The Chief-office Deputy, Chief-field Deputy, Under-office Deputy, and Draughtsman, may be employed the entire year, and shall be paid as follows : the Chief Deputies two hundred dollars per month, each ; the Under-office Deputy and Draughtsman, one hundred and fifty dollars per month each .- [ Amendment February 8, 1868.]
SUPPLEMENTAL II .- An Act relating to the Board of Supervisors, and more particularly defining its powers and duties .- Approved March 30, 1868.
SECTION 1. Each member of the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco, excepting the Mayor ex officio President of said Board, shall, after the passage of this Act, be allowed a salary, during the time he is in office, of one hundred dollars per month ; and the Auditor of said city and county is hereby directed to audit, and the Treasurer to pay, such salaries monthly out of the General Fund.
SEC. 2. The votes of seven members constituting the Board of Supervisors shall be neces- sary to pass any ordinance, order or resolution ; but in the event of a veto by the Mayor, then nine votes shall be necessary to pass any ordinance, order, or resolution, over such veto ; other- wise such ordinance, order, or resolution, shall be of no validity.
SEC. 3. If a member of said Board of Supervisors shall hereafter absent himself from the State, or shall neglect to attend the meetings of said Board, for the period of ninety days, his office may be declared vacaut by the Board, and a successor may be appointed* for the unex- pired term, as provided in other cases.
SEC. 4. This Act shall be construed so as to harmonize with existing laws in regard to the powers and duties of said Board of Supervisors ; and all such laws shall continue in full force except so far as they may be inconsistent or in conflict with the provisions of this Act ; and only so far as they are inconsistent or in conflict with this Act, they are hereby repealed. .
To the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, two hundred dollars per month .- [ Amendment April 4, 1863.] And in addition to this salary, the compensation allowed by law to the Clerk of the Board of Equalization for official services relating to the collection of poll taxes. He shall also be entitled to receive from the parties at whose instance the service may be performed, (the city and county excepted) twenty-five cents for administering an oath, twenty-five cents per folio of one hundred words for writing out affidavits, and sixteen cents per folio for certified copies of any records, papers, or documents, iu his custody.t
The Clerk of the Board of Supervisors has authority to appoint a Deputy or Assistant Clerk, to be approved by said Board, whose salary shall be fixed by the said Board at a sum not exceeding one hundred and twenty-five dollars per month, [Act March 14, 1868] payable out of the General Fund ; said Deputy, when required by the Board, to act as Sergeant-at-Arms at its meetings, without additional compensation therefor .- [ Aet February 14, 1866.]

provided for, shall not have power to receipt for moneys, or administer oaths in matters appertaining to said office .- [ Act March 25, 1868.] He shall also be allowed one Auctioneer, to conduct tax sales, whose compensation for sales of real estate delinquent for taxes, in any one year, shall not exceed the sum of two hundred dollars. All fees, commissions, percentages, and other compensation, of whatever nature or kind, heretofore allowed by law, or which may here- after be allowed by law, as the compensation of the Tax-Collector of said city and county, for the collection of State and County taxes, shall be paid into the Special Fee Fund .- [Amend- ment April 10, 1862.]

To one Deputy-Treasurer, one hundred and seventy-five dollars per month ; and to one addi- tional Deputy, one hundred and twenty-five dollars per month .- [Amendment April 4, 1863.] To the County Recorder, four thousand dollars per annum.
To one Chief Deputy Recorder, one hundred and seventy-five dollars per month. - [Act April 26, 1862.] For two additional Deputies, each one hundred and fifty dollars per month .- [ Amendments April 4, 1863, and March 26, 1868.] The Recorder may also employ as many Deputy Clerks as he may deem necessary to duly perform the duties of his office, and they shall be paid at the rate of twelve cents per folio of one hundred words for all matters either registered or copied by them respectively. The Recorder or his Chief Deputy, when any papers are presented for registration, or to be copied, shall write on the margin of each paper so presented the number of folios paid for ; and shall, in his monthly return to the Treasurer, certify under oath the number of folies copied or registered by each one of said Deputy Clerks; and such certificate of the Recorder or his Chief Deputy shall be conclusive evidence to authorize the Auditor to audit such certified accounts of such Deputy Clerks, monthly.
To one Porter, or Watchman, for the Recorder's Office, not to exceed seventy-five dollars per month.
To the Harbor Master, three thousand dollars per annum .*
To the Superintendent of Common Schools, four thousand dollars per annum.
To the Clerk of the Superintendent of Common Schools, who shall also act as Secretary of the Board of Education, one hundred and twenty-five dollars per month, payable from the School Fund, as now provided for by law.
To the Superintendent of Public Streets and Highways, four thousand dollars per annum.
To the Deputies of the Superintendent of Streets and Highways,; one hundred and fifty dollars per month each.
The District Attorney's fees, taxed as costs in criminal cases, against the defendant, shall be collected and paid into the treasury as a special fund, out of which, and from no other source, the Board of Supervisors may provide for payment of the compensation, (not exceeding twenty- five hundred dollars per annum) of a Prosecuting Attorney for the Police Court, to be by them appointed during pleasure ; the District Attorney, however, not being relieved from the obligation to attend personally in said Court, whenever business of importance shall require his assistance.
No compensation shall be allowed to School Directors, and no fees or compensation, to be paid out of the City and County Treasury, other than those expressly allowed in this Act, shall be allowed or received by any officer of said city and county, or of any district ; nor shall any allowance or provision be made for them, or any of them, at the public expense, beyond the fixed compensation aforesaid, under the name of office rent, fuel, lights, stationery, contingencies, or otherwise, except that the necessary and proper books, stationery, and official blanks, may, at the discretion of the Board of Supervisors, be purchased and supplied for the Police Court, Court of Sessions, Grand Juries, and offices of the County Clerk, County Recorder, Auditor, Treasurer, Assessor, Superintendent of Streets and Highways, and the Board of Supervisors ; the expense whereof, when the amount in each particular case shall have been previously authorized and fixed by the Board of Supervisors, may be paid out of the General Fund, upon demands upon the Treasury, duly audited as provided in this Act : provided, that the total amount of expenditures for all of the aforesaid books, stationery, and official blanks, shall not exceed the sum of twenty-five hundred dollars in any one year.
FIRE DEPARTMENT.
The provisions of this section, relative to the salaries of the Fire Department, have been superseded by the following :
* An appropriation of seventy-five dollars per month is allowed for boat hire and office rent .- [Act April 2, 1866.]
+ The Act of April 25, 1863, allows the Superintendent of Streets and Highways, at the discretion of the Board of Supervisors, not less than three nor more than six Deputies, three of which shall receive one hundred and fifty dollars per month each, and three. one hundred and twenty-five dollars per month each, to be by him appointed from time to time ; and the Act of March 14. 1863, authorizes the appointment of a Deputy Clerk, at a salary to be fixed by the Board of Supervisors, not to exceed one hundred and fifty dollars per month.

SUPPLEMENTAL III .- An Act to establish a Paid Fire Department for the City and County of San Francisco .- Approved March 2, 1866.
SECTION 1. There shall be a Board of Fire Commissioners of the City and County of San Francisco, consisting of five (5) persons of good character and standing, citizens of the United States, and who shall have been residents of said city and county for at least two years previous to their appointment or election as such Commissioners ; and said Board of Fire Commissioners shall be constituted as follows : At the general election for the city and county officers, to be held in said city and county in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty-six, two of said Commissioners shall be elected by the people. At the first meeting of the Board of Supervisors of said city and county after said election, or as soon thereafter as practicable, said Board of Supervisors shall appoint one other Commissioner ; and within thirty days thereafter, the other two of said Commissioners shall be appointed by the association known as the Board of Fire Underwriters of the City and County of San Francisco ; and as soon as all said Commissioners have been appointed, they shall draw for the term of their respective offices, viz : One for the term of five (5) years ; one for the term of four (4) years ; one for the term of three (3) years ; one for the term of two (2) years; one for the term of one (1) year ; and annually thereafter, there shall be appointed or elected, as the case may be, in the same manner as the person retiring may have been elected or appointed, one person of like character to fill such vacancy, to serve for the term of five years.
SEC. 2. In the event of a refusal or neglect to perform the duties of their office, on the part of any one or more of said Commissioners, or in the event of a vacancy occurring from any cause, the said Board of Supervisors, being duly certified thereof by any one of the said Com- missioners, shall declare the office of such Commissioner vacant ; and if such vacancy shall be in the office of the Commissioner appointed by the Board of Supervisors, or in the office of the Commissioner elected by the people, said Board of Supervisors shall fill such vacancy at its first session, or as soon thereafter as practicable ; or if such vacancy shall be in the office of a Com- missioner appointed by said Board of Fire Underwriters, said Board of Supervisors shall forth- with require said Board of Fire Underwriters to fill such vacancy, the new appointee io either case to hold office until the period of the annual reelection or reappointment, as provided in the first section of this Act.
SEC. 3. The said Fire Commissioner shall appoint a Clerk, who by virtue of his office shall be a member of the Fire Department, constituted by this Act, and who shall receive a salary of one hundred dollars ($100) per month, but shall not be entitled to any other pay, under the pro- visions of this Act. Said Clerk shall also perform the duties of a Clerk to the Chief Engineer. And the said Fire Commissioners shall be authorized to fit up an office for their use, which shall be centrally located, the cost of which, together with the rents and necessary stationery, shall be paid by the city and county. And said Fire Commissioners, upon their organization, shall immediately have full power, by the vote and concurrence of a majority thereof, subject to the approval of the Board of Supervisors, to take all the necessary steps and proceedings to pre- pare the Fire Department, constituted by this Act, to go into active operation on the first Mon- day of December, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-six .- [ Amendment April 2, 1866.]
SEC. 4. The Fire Department of the City and County of San Francisco shall consist of one Chief Engineer, two Assistant Engineers, one Clerk to the Board of Fire Commissioners and Chief Engineer, who shall give a bond in the sum of ten thousand dollars, with two or more sureties for the faithful performance of his duties ; one Corporation Yard Keeper ; seven Steam Fire Engine Companies, to consist each of one Foreman, one Engineer, one Driver, one Fireman, and eight Hosemen, one of whom shall act as Assistant Foreman, and one as Clerk, which Clerk shall receive five dollars per month extra ; two Hook and Ladder Companies, to consist each of one Foreman, one Driver, one Tillerman, and twelve Hook and Ladder Men, one of whom shall act as Assistant Foreman, and one as Clerk ; said Clerk shall receive five dollars per month extra ; and Five Hose Companies, to consist each of one Foreman, one Driver, one Steward, and six Hosemen, one of whom shall act as Assistant Foreman, and one as Clerk, which Clerk shall receive five dollars per inonth extra. Each Steam Fire Engine Company shall have one steam fire engine, one hose reel, one thousand feet of hose, and not more than three horses. Each Hook and Ladder Company shall have one truck, with hooks and ladders and necessary and proper appurtenances and appliances, and two horses. Each Hose Company shall have one hose cart and reel, with one thousand feet of hose, and one horse. But the Board of Supervisors shall have power to increase or diminish the number of Fire Companies, as the public safety of the city and county may require, and to purchase the necessary steam engines, apparatus, and appurten- ances therefor ; and they may organize such Volunteer Companies, for outside districts, as they may deem necessary, and place apparatus in their keeping; but no member of any such Volun- teer Company shall receive any salary for such service from the city and county .- [Amendment March 9,1868.]

SEC. 5. The Chief Engineer and two Assistant Engineers shall be appointed by the Fire Commissioners at least thirty days before the first Monday of December, eighteen hundred and sixty-six, whose term of office shall be two years from the first Monday of December, eighteen hundred and sixty-six, and until their successors are appointed, and who shall be appointed every two years thereafter ; their appointment and removal to be confirmed by the Supervisors. The subordinate officers and extra men shall be appointed by the Fire Commissioners ; and in case of misbehavior or neglect of duty, on the part of any officer or extra man of the Fire Depart- ment, the said Commissioners shall have power to remove them, under such regulations as the Supervisors may prescribe .- [Amendment April 2, 1866.]
SEC. 6. The salaries of the officers and men, comprising said Fire Department, shall not ex- ceed the following sams, to be paid monthly : Chief Engineer, two hundred and fifty dollars per month ; two Assistant Engineers, one hundred and forty dollars per month; one Clerk to the Board of Fire Commissioners and Chief Engineer, one hundred and thirty dollars per month ; Superintendent of Corporation Yard, seventy-five dollars per month ; each Foreman, forty-five dollars per month ; each Engineer, one hundred and forty dollars per month ; each Driver, seventy-five dollars per month ; each Fireman, seventy-five dollars per month ; each Tillerman, seventy-five dollars per month ; each Steward, sixty-five dollars per month; each Hose and Hook and Ladder Man, thirty-five dollars per month. All the paid members of the Fire Depart- ment, except the Foremen, Assistant Foremen, Clerk, Hose Men, and Hook and Ladder Men, shall give their undivided attention to their respective duties. Under this Act, the Foremen, Assistant Foremen, Clerk, Hose Men, and Hook and Ladder Men, shall perform such duties as may be prescribed, from time to time, by the Board of Fire Commissioners .-- [Amendment March 9, 1868.]
