CHINESE BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION .- Established 1862. Snstained by the Hop Wo Com- pany, 736 Commercial Street. Shong Gee, Agent. The object of this association is to assist Chinese coming to this State, to assist them when desiring to return to China ; to minister to the sick, bury the dead, and return their corpses to their native land.


CLERK'S RELIEF SOCIETY .- Organized in the spring of 1864. Meets every Saturday evening, at 410 Kearny Street. Committee on Vacancies meet every Tuesday and Friday evenings. The pur- pose and aim of the society is to assist merchant clerks. 1st. In finding employment for the unem- ployed. 2d. In assisting sick members. 3d. In promoting education and sociality among members. 4th. In assisting merchant clerks who are in need. The society has at present (October, 1869) about two bundred members. The German language is prin- cipally used in its meetings ; but persons of all na- tionalities are received as members. The society is in possession of a very good selected library of about twenty-two hundred volumes, consisting of classical, historical, and scientific works, novels, etc., in the German, English, and French languages.

The object of this association is to estab- lish an institution for mutual assistance to ladies of the Ilebrew faith, who may become members of the association ; to furnish a physician and medicine, a weekly benefit to sick members ; and, on the death of a member. to defray the funeral expenses.

FRENCH BENEVOLENT SOCIETY (Société Française de Bienfaisance Mutnelle) .- Established December 28th, 1851. This is a Mutual Relief Soci- ety, established for the purpose of affording assist- ance to its members, in case of sickness. The office of the society is located at Pioneer Hall, 808 Mont- gomery Street. A new and commodions hospital has been recently erected on Bryant Street between Fifth and Sixth, which forms a very important addi- tion to the charitable institutions of the city.

GERMAN GENERAL BENEVOLENT SOCI- ETY OF SAN FRANCISCO (styled in German, Die Allgemeine Deutsche Untersteutzungs Gesell- schaft), is one of the largest and most efficient chari- table associations in this State. It was organized on the seventh of January, 1854, with one hundred and five members, and has rapidly increased until now it numbers thirteen hundred and forty-two city members.and fonr bundred and eighty in the interior.


Only Germans and persons speaking Geriau are admitted to membership. The chief purpose of the association is mutual assistance in case of sickness, and when sick every member has a right to demand support and medical attendance from the society. The society has a second purpose of doing charity to Germans not members of the association, and es- pecially to German immigrants newly arrived. The society has a hospital situated on Brannan Street near Third, bnilt of brick, two stories high, with a basement, one hundred and twelve and one-half feet front, fifty feet deep, with a wing in the rear of twenty-three feet front. one hundred and twenty- two feet deep. furnished with steam, sulphur, hot and cold water and shower baths, and other con- venienees for the treatment of the sick. The wards are smaller than in any other hospital in the city, so that not many patients are put together in a room. The lot upon which the hospital is built is one hun- dred and thirty-seven feet six inches wide by two hundred and seventy five feet long. the whole sur- rounded by a high fence and cultivated in a fine garden, a part planted with ornamental flowers and shrubs, and a part with kitchen vegetables. The property of the society, including the lot and hospital buildings, is worth about $50,000, and a lot recently purchased, bounded by Sanchez, Noe, Dale, und Vale streets, valued at $18,000. The revenue of the society amonuted in 1868 to $26,3-16.68, derived chiefly from a monthly assessment of one dollar levied on each member. The expenses the same

ITALIAN BENEVOLENT SOCIETY (Societa Italiana di Mutua Benificenza.) -- Organized October 17th, 1858.


This is a mutual relief society, established for the purpose of affording assistance to indigent sick mem- bers. A hospital with all modern improvements has recently been erected by subscriptions from Italians, on the block bounded by Twenty-eighth, Twenty- ninth, Noe, and Dale streets, where the sick mem- bers are properly cared for. Meetings held the first Monday of each month at 430 Jackson Street.

Objects: To cultivate a friendly feeling among its members; to assist each other when necessary, and to secure, by inviting their cooperation as members, a more perfect union among all former residents of the State of New York residing in California.
