The law for the establishment and regulation of the United States Mint, and the branches thereof, provides that any person may deposit with the offi- cers in charge of the same, gold and silver in bul- lion, grain, or lumps, which, if requested, shall be refined, aseayed, and cast into bars or coined, as speedily as possible after the receipt thereof. The bars to be stamped in said mint or branches in such manner as shall indicate the weight, value, and fine- ness of the same. The expense incurred to be re- tained from each deposit so made, at such rates and charges, and under such regulations, as may from time to time be established. The said charges not to exceed the actual cost of refining, casting, and forming said bars, including labor, wastage, use of machinery, material, etc., or one-half per cent. for coinage, to be received by the Treasurer of the Mint at which the deposit was made, and by him accounted for to the Treasurer of the United States.

Great Overland Mail from San Francisco to New York via Salt Lake and Omaha closes daily (except Sundays) at half-past seven o'clock A.M., and on Saturdays at three o'clock P.M.


English Closed Mail closes Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at nine o'clock P. M.


Mails for Sacramento and the Northern Mines close daily at thirty minutes past seven o'clock A.M., and fifteen minutes past three o'clock P.M. ; for Benicia, Vallejo, etc., at the same hour.


Mails for Stockton and the Southern Mines close daily at forty-five minutes past three o'clock P.M.


Mails for San José, etc., close daily at twenty minutes past seven o'clock A.M., and four o'clock P. M.


Mails for Petaluma leave daily at forty minutes past eight o'clock A.M.


Mails for Eureka, via Petaluma, leave Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at forty minutes past eight o'clock A.M.


Mails for Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Arizona are dispatched at twenty minutes past seven o'clock A.M. daily.


Mails for Acapulco, Panama, and South America, are forwarded by steamer every fifteen days, and close at half-past nine o'clock on the morning of the sailing of the steamer.


Mails for China and Sandwich Islands are for- warded regularly by steamer and by every suit- able opportunity, containing all letters and papers, the inland postage of which is prepaid to San Francisco, leaving the sea postage to be collected in the ports where the mails are delivered.


Letters must be fully prepaid by stamps. Drop letters must be prepaid by postage stamps. Letters will not be sent with stamps cut from stamped en- velopes or Internal Revenue stamps.


The Post-office opens at eight o'clock A.M., and closes at four o'clock P.M., every day, except Sun- days.


Open Sundays from nine to ten o'clock A.M.


The General Delivery will be open from seven to half past eight o'clock every evening, except Sun- days.


THE POSTAL MONEY-ORDER SYSTEM


Is intended to promote public convenience, and to insure safety in the transfer of money through the mails. Orders may be obtained at any of the Money- order Offices for any amount up to fifty dollars, on payment of the following fee : On sums up to and including twenty dollars, ten cents ; over twenty dollars and not exceeding thirty dollars, fifteen cents; over thirty dollars and not exceeding forty dollars, twenty cents ; over forty dollars and not exceeding fifty dollars, twenty-five cents. Instructions are in- dorsed on the back of each order.


FREE POSTAL DELIVERY.


The free delivery system, recently established in this city, is similar to the one so successfully main- tained in several of the large Eastern cities. There are seventeen districts, each of which being in charge of a carrier who delivers promptly all mail matter received at the Post-office, upon which is written the correct address, street, and number of the party for whom it is intended.


All persons who desire their letters, etc., retained until called for, must leave their address at the Post- office.
