BRITISH BENEVOLENT SOCIETY OF CALIFORNIA. - Rooms No. 730 Montgomery Street.
This society was organized in 1865, for the pur- pose of affording relief to persons in poverty or sickness, who were subjects of Great Britain at the time of their birth, and of promoting the social and intellectual improvement of its members. Between seven and eight hundred men, including many citi- zens of the United States, have been admitted to membership, and there are now some four hundred paying members on the rolls. In May, 1867, the association was completely reorganized and incor- porated, and a Constitution adopted, containing sev- eral admirable features, and, among others, provis- ions for free lectures and debates. From the time of its formation, the affairs of the society have been carefully and judiciously managed, and its charity dispensed with prudent liberality. It has uniformly cooperated with the San Francisco Benevolent As- sociation and other local organizations, and through its agency their burden has been greatly lightened, many hundreds of sick and destitute men, women and children, effectively relieved, and a large num- ber provided for with employment. The relief given is, for the most part, temporary ; and, at present, under the new system adopted by the Board of Relief, averages $4.11 per case. During the year ending on April 30th, 1869, the smallest number of applications for any one month was thirty-seven, and the smallest amount expended $ 18.71 ; the largest number of applications during the same period was seventy-five for the inclement month of January, involving expenditure of $218.50. For the year terminating April 30th, 1869, the total number of persons assisted was four hundred and ninety-six, ana the total amount expended for their benefit $2,036.55. The introduction of various lit- erary and social features, and the opening of a correspondence throughout this and the adjoining States and Territories, it is confidently expected will largely add to the usefulness of the institu- tion, which has already attracted the marked ad- miration of the people of San Francisco.
