The schools, under a corps of compe- tent instructors, are in a flourishing condition, and the results obtained compare favorably with the at- tainments made in the long-established institutions of the Atlantic States. The blind, by ingenious ap- paratus devised for their use, are tanght reading, writing, arithmetic, geography, grammar, history, ete., to which is added, as a solace in their great affliction, the art of music. The deaf and dumb are instructed in the same branches, substituting draw- ing for music. By the Act of 1865-6, all deaf and dumb, or blind persons, residents of this State, bs. tween the ages of six and twenty-five years, and of sound mind, may be received free of expense, ex- cept for clothing and traveling expenses. Pupils from other States and Territories are admitted on payment of $300 per annum. The institution is open to visitors every day, except Sundays, from nine o'clock A.M. till three o'clock P.M.
